A Memory in February

Sharp air and the scent of frost under bold blue skies:

A sudden and curious memory of youth's joyous riot,

Of untamed ambition, of choices not yet made.

We could have it all and more and then some:

Calamitous love inexplicable to others,

More intense than any that had come before;

Adventures beyond the dull imaginations of most,

In which we authored destiny's heroic plots;

Voyages to the places that stole our nights,

Lost by torchlight in the magic of a writer's words;

The banishing of old ways and older gods,

Surefooted in our belief that we will truly be alive.

Like bold hymns we have long forgot, these thoughts

Sometimes echo between the walls of dull suburbia:

Reminders of our innocent arrogance surrendered.
