"So tell me about this band David is most likely joining? What are they like?" Virginia asks as you drive back towards your house.

"They're great! I'm still trying to get used to the music Dave likes, some of it is a little extreme for me, but I know enough to know these guys are super talented. Between you and I Dave is a little too talented for his current band." You say and she nods knowingly.

"I've always known that about him. Some kids are just born for certain things, from what Dave told me you were born with an affinity for books and brilliant mind" She compliments with a warm smile and you blush, "My son was born with a talent for music that blows me away to this day"

"He is very talented. . ." You say with a nod, looking out the window at the familiar suburban streets you had known your whole life.

"So is this band well known?" Virginia asks.

"Yeah, they're one of the more well known bands in the area. They have a record deal and they play a lot of shows and stuff" You shrug, not completely sure as to how popular Scream was yourself.

"Does that mean they'll be touring a lot?" She asks with a sigh and you're taken aback, you hadn't thought much about that side of things yet.

"Uh, I don't really know...now that you mention it though, I think they might be. The guys in the band do talk a lot about time on the road" You say, still thinking over how that might affect you two, even though he hadn't mentioned anything yet.

"Have you two talked about that at all? Has he mentioned anything specific?" Virginia follows up and you shake your head.

"I always knew this day would come" She says with another sigh.

"What do you mean?" You ask, curious about her cryptic statement.

"Well Dave is very talented, and as he got more interested in music and less interested in school—well I figured the day would come when he decided school was no longer practical. If this band tours as much as I would expect they do he may have to stop going to school" She says and suddenly you feel like the room is spinning.

"I never thought about it that way." You say and immediately regret floods Virginia's face.

"Oh honey, I didn't mean to upset you" She says as you pull up to your house, "I shouldn't have been making assumptions. I don't really know anything for sure about this, we don't even know if he's in the band yet"

"You're right," You say working as hard as you can to plaster a smile onto your face so she doesn't feel bad, "Thank you so much for the ride. Tell Dave to call me when he gets home" You add.

"Will do! Lovely to meet you Julia" She says and you wave as you walk up to your house.

A few hours later you were sitting on the floor of your bedroom, annotating The Great Gatsby for English class and trying not to think about Dave, when you hear a weird noise from outside your window.

You look out the window and just as you do, something comes up and hits it.

"Hello?" You yell down, and then you realize Dave is throwing rocks at your window. Your heart leaps in your chest when you see his smiling face greet you.

"Hey, let me in will you?" He yells back and you immediately rush downstairs.

Once you open the door Dave immediately sweeps you into his arms and spins you around in a circle, his signature move.

"How did your audition go?" You ask breathlessly but his wide smile has already answered that question for you.

"It went amazing! The energy was just there from like minute one, I'm not even kidding! they're so fucking tight!" He exclaims, "They asked me to join like five minutes into the jam, not even that long...and my first show is Thursday! So soon!"

"That is soon!" You say, smiling as wide as you can without your real emotions coming through.

"You're coming to my first show, no if, ands, or buts about it missy" He yells, kissing you on the tip of your nose.

"Of course! I wouldn't miss it for anything, you know that!" You say back, his enthusiasm so adorable that its infectious.

"Do you want to sit on the porch for a minute?" You ask a second later.

"I'm too wired! Lets go for a walk instead! You game?" Dave says enthusiastically.

"Sure, lets do that." You say, grabbing your jacket and taking Dave's hand.

"So Pete and Franz were totally amazing about everything, they told me I could take more time to learn the songs so I felt more comfortable but I told them I practically learned to play by practicing their songs. And we've got so many more gigs coming up, plus they mentioned something about making another record soon, which would be fucking crazy—" You interrupt Dave because you can't take it anymore.

He'd been talking non-stop about Scream since you'd started walking and though you thought you could suppress it, at least for today, you couldn't get the questions you had about tour and Dave leaving school out of your head.

"Dave, can I ask you something?" You ask and when he nods you continue, "Did any of the guys say anything about a tour?"

Immediately after he hears what you asked his shoulders slump and he looks down at his sneakers.

"I wanted to wait a few days to mention that to you, I didn't want it to rain on the parade" He begins in a much more subdued tone than before, "We're going to Europe, for like four months"

You feel as though the air has been knocked out of you.

"W-w-when do you leave?" You manage to choke out and he immediately reaches out and wraps his arm around you.

"Two weeks" He whispers and you feel tears spring to your eyes.

"Oh don't cry Jules" He says, sounding slightly distressed himself, "We'll figure it out."

"We're in high school Dave, we haven't even been dating a month. How are we supposed to handle this much time apart?" You cry and he stops walking so he can wipe away the few tears you let escape.

"I just feel like this is too good for it to end so fast, but its too soon for it to last" You add and he shakes his head.

"Listen, I've never felt this way about a girl before, and I won't give up on you—I won't let you give up on this either so don't get any ideas" He warns playfully. You know this is in an effort to make you laugh and it works, at least momentarily.

"I care about you so much Julia and I know that I won't let a few months apart ruin that for me" He says and you look up at him for the first time since you cried, "Will you let a couple days apart ruin us?"

You shake your head before speaking again, "But Dave it isn't that simple, we can't just expect things to work out magically—" You begin but Dave cuts you off.

"We're the king and queen of letting things that aren't simple work themselves out! Look at us right now! A few months ago if someone had told me you and Drew would be broken up and you'd be a month into dating me I would've thought they were insane, but look how things worked out." He wraps his arm around you as he talks and begins to walk you back to the house.

"I promise here and now, that no matter how hard things get they'll work out for us in the end. No matter what we'll end up together and happy!"

"That's a whole lotta faith" You say as you wipe your eyes with the back of your hand, "But I'll take it."

"A whole lotta faith in a perfect girl...soundslike a pretty safe bet to me"
