"Hey Jules, whatcha up to?" Asks the voice attached to the arm.
"Hi Drew" You say grinning and kissing him on the cheek in greeting.
"Dave this is my boyfriend, Drew" You say and Dave reaches out and shakes his hand.
"Hey man nice to meet you" Dave says with a huge friendly smile, "I've gotta go I'm starving" He declares hastily before walking over to the burnout guys you saw him with this morning, who were sitting on the benches in the very back of the room.
"Who was that guy?" Drew asks as he leads you over to the table you usually sat at. It was populated by varsity cheerleaders and varsity football or basketball players and was situated right in the middle of the lunchroom, so everyone could see you guys.
Normally this didn't really bother you but today you felt embarrassed as you took your seat next to your best friend Annie and watched Dave pull his paper lunch bag out on the opposite side of the room.
"He's some guy my math teacher asked me to help out. I guess he's a new transfer and we have the same study hall so I was assigned to him" You answer with a shrug.
"Hey Annie" You say sitting down and she makes a hello motion as he chews her carrot sticks.
"He seems a little weird, he's hanging with those drug dealer kids. Are you sure he's safe for you to hang out with?" Asks Drew.
Previously you had found his overprotectiveness at times cute and a sign of how much he liked you, but today you just found it condescending.
"He seems fine Drew, I'm not worried about it. Plus its not like we'll ever be together except in math and study hall . . .oh, and homeroom. But that's all so it won't even be an issue what he does with the people he hangs with" You say with a shrug.
"Ok whatever, no need to get so defensive," Drew says, getting up from the table, "I'm gonna get a sandwich, you want anything?" He asks.
"Yeah can I have a diet coke, I'm really tired all of a sudden" You respond.
"Sure thing babe" He says, giving you a kiss on the top of your head before heading over to the lunch line.
"Ok so now that he's gone spill! I saw you looking at that guy you two were arguing about, what's the deal?!" Says Annie as soon as Drew is gone. She wiggles her eyebrows knowingly and you know you have to look away or your face will reveal too much.
"We weren't even arguing. And there's nothing to tell, I honestly don't know him" You say taking one of her carrots and dipping it in ranch.
"Don't lie to me Julia Jean!" She says, pursing her lips in a mock serious way.
"He's sort of charming I guess. And subjectively cute—I suppose." You say still without looking at her.
"You like him Jules!" She says loudly, smacking your arm and grinning.
"Keep it down! I do not like him!" You say forcefully, "I have a boyfriend who is perfect for me."
She rolls her eyes and you choose not to question why she does so, "I think you guys would be cute together" She says looking over at him on the other side of the lunchroom, sitting with his friends and tapping the table energetically.
"Even if I was looking for a boyfriend and I did want to date him we wouldn't work! We are completely opposite people! Plus he's too old for me" You protest.
"He's a junior right?" She asks and you nod, "You're a sophomore dating a junior right now, what's the big difference?" She asks.
"Well he had to repeat his freshman year so he's the same age as like the seniors. This is his third school in 4 years!" You explain.
"Ah I see, so you're entering your bad boy phase, I get it . . ." She says with a smirk and a nod.
"No I'm not and seriously Annie, please drop it—I'm not kidding." Your voice fades to a whisper as you see Drew walking back over to the table.
"One diet coke" He says setting it down in front of you.
"Thanks Drew" You say trying to hand him a few bucks but he refuses.
"No kiddo, you're my girlfriend you don't have to pay me back" He says pushing your hand away.
You turn to Annie and mouth "See, perfect" She rolls her eyes but doesn't say anymore and you go back to your lunch.
The rest of your day goes on pretty uneventfully but you can't even deny to yourself that you're looking forward to study hall last period more than any other class in the day.
When you showed up to the library you see Dave sitting at an otherwise unoccupied table and you immediately take the seat right next to him.
"Hey, how's your day been since homeroom?" You ask.
"Boring" He says, "You weren't in any of my other classes" He adds and you don't know what to say. He was obviously flirting with you and you didn't know how to respond.
"Are you ready to start math?" You ask pulling out your textbook and notebook.
"So that guy today, he was your boyfriend?" Dave asks, looking up through his eyelashes at you with a sneaky half smile.
"Yes, that's how I introduced him to you so it must be the case" You say, flipping to the page you needed to be at in your textbook. It was undeniable at this point that he was interested in you as a more than a study buddy and you didn't know how to handle it.
Rephrasing that you know how you wanted to handle it and you knew how you should handle it but you didn't know which you actually should go with.
"He was tall" He says, crossing his arms and still pulling out zero math materials.
"So are you." You retort looking up at him with a sigh. He winks at you and you can't help but laugh. You knew this was a bad idea, but no harm could come from a little flirting as long as you kept it under your control.
Before you can say anything else you feel a cold hand touch your shoulder and piercing, peppermint breath hit your cheek. You look behind you to see Christie kneeled next to you with an unhappy look on her face.
"Julia what is on your shoes?" She asks, pursing her lips.
"Someone spilled coffee on me this morning, right after I got in the building" You respond exasperatedly.
"Our whole uniform is supposed to be immaculate, not just for games but for practices too. How do you expect to be at the top of the pyramid if girls have to put their hands all over your filthy shoes to get you there?" She asks pointedly.
"I'm sorry Christie" You say embarrassedly. You hated being reprimanded so the whole library could hear, but most of all you couldn't believe she was making such a big deal out of this.
"You need to get new shoes before practice starts today or I'll consider taking away your spot on the pyramid." She says flipping her hair behind her ear before adding in a whisper, "And we all know that's the only reason you're on varsity so I would think you'd want to keep it"
"Practice starts at 3:15, there's no way I'll have time to buy new shoes." You say, not believing she had just threatened your spot on the team for a coffee stain on your shoe.
"That is not my problem Julia." She say shaking her head.
"Hey listen, that stain was not her fault, I saw it happen. My friend was skateboarding in the halls and was holding coffee and he ran into her. She was innocent." Dave says and though you're thankful that he tried you know there's no use.
"Who is he?" Asks Christie rudely, without even looking at Dave.
"I'm tutoring him in math" You mumble before shooting Dave a thankful glance.
"Yeah well no one needs to make excuses for you Julia. Just get the shoes, don't whine about it" She says before walking away.
"What the fuck was that?!" Asks Dave as she walks back to the corner where she was sitting with Karen.
"That was varsity cheerleading" You say rubbing your eyes, "Lower your voice please?" You beg, exhausted by your public beating.
"You just let her walk all over you, the hell was that" He says incredulously, "Who is she, Mussolini?"
You have to work hard to stop yourself from laughing before you respond, "She wishes. She just takes herself very seriously, and it isn't that dramatic, my friend keeps an extra pair of shoes just in case."
"I guess so. . .good luck with her princess" He mutters before getting up out of his chair.
"Where are you going?!" You ask immediately, too disturbed by his leaving to care about keeping up your nonchalant mood.
"Duty calls, I have band practice today and my band mates don't exactly live local" He shrugs.
"So you're just going to skip class?" You don't know why you're surprised; he's already made it quite clear he isn't the academic type.
"You mean study hall?!" He answers with a laugh, "Um yeah I am" He laughs again.
"Ok. I guess I'll see you tomorrow morning then." You say dejectedly, feeling your cheeks redden from your over the top reaction.
"See you then princess, I'll be waiting" He whispers as he swings his bag over his shoulder, throwing you one last wink as he walks out the door.
