"I wish we didn't have to go home" You lament as you crawl into Dave's mom's car five minutes later.
"We don't!" Dave looks at you with a twinkle in his eye, "The night is still young Julia."
"Dave its 3 am!" You exclaim and he laughs, "Where can we even go?"
"Come on, don't you cheerleaders ever have long, wild nights like this? Are your parents expecting you home at any time?" He asks.
"No, my dad's on a trip and when he's gone my mom doesn't bother enforcing curfew—where are we going?" You add as he begins to drive away.
"What does your old man do?" He asks.
"He works for Reagan" You answer and you laugh as Dave turns to the the window and pretends to puke.
"Hey I didn't choose his career" You say, holding up your hands as though surrendering, "and don't avoid my question, where are we going?"
"We're getting McDonalds drive thru, and from there on no more questions" He warns and you snort.
After you're able to locate the McDonalds and then find your way back to the expressway, your watch tells you its 4 am.
"Dave come on, where are we going? Its getting so late! I know I said my mom didn't enforce curfew but if she wakes up and I'm not home she won't take it well!" You say and Dave shakes his head.
"I will not be swayed by these tactics! We're close but no other clues" He declares.
You look out the window to see what you were driving by, you had been so distracted by talking to Dave you hadn't even noticed where you were. Its hard to see through the darkness but it seems like you're driving along the Potomac river.
"You didn't take me out here to murder me or anything?" You ask, half joking but half nervous and he just rolls his eyes.
"Oh my god you're so dramatic. We'll be there in 5 seconds. Check the backseat for weapons if you're still nervous" He sarcastically replies as he turns off the main road to a parking lot just off the docks.
"Get out of the car" He says and you do as you're told while Dave cranks up the radio. You both lie on the hood of his car and look up at the sky.
You can still see faint stars in the winter sky above you.
"Its so beautiful out here" You state the obvious as you watch the stars contrast against the darkness.
"When I was little my dad used to take us here to watch the boats really early in the morning. I loved it so much back then, it still takes me back to come here. I feel younger down here" Dave says and you nod.
You talk about all sorts of different things: music, books, growing up in Virginia.
"I just really wanna get out of here as soon as possible" You say as Dave pulls out another cigarette and you wave off his offering you one.
"Virginia?" Dave asks, looking surprised.
"Yeah. I don't know, it just feels empty here. I feel like there's so much more out there that's more interesting." You attempt to explain, still knowing you sound too vague.
"I wanna get out of here too, but I always wanna come back. I love it here. Its home, plus we got the best music scene out there. I'm going to tour and stuff once the bands I'm in get big enough but I'm always coming back here." He says, "It just seems like the perfect life is out here"
"I guess I might want to come back here too. Once I have kids and stuff, once I've seen enough of the world on my own."
Just when there was a pause in conversation you hear Baba O'Riley coming from the car radio.
"Oh my god, I loved this song when I was younger" You squeal and Dave laughs.
"Baba O'Riley?" Dave asks with a condescending laugh and you blush, "You've come a long way then."
"Nah, nah, I love this song too" Dave says when he sees how embarrassed you are.
"Sure you do" You respond, rolling your eyes.
"I really do!" He protests and then proceeds to start singing along, "Out here in the fields/I fight for my meals/I get my back into my living."
"Come on sing along" Dave urges and you shake your head, "Please, please, please—I'll let you help me with math for a week, no complaints" He begs and you give in.
"I can't turn down that offer" You say and he smiles widely.
"Don't cry, don't raise your eye/Its only teenage wasteland " You both scream along to the chorus and when Dave takes another drag of his cigarette you both fade out.
"We hit that harmony really well!" Dave says, sounding pleasantly surprised, "You're a great singer Julia, I had no idea" He says.
"My mom sang. She always made me sign up for lessons and different choirs and plays. Its probably just residual talent I picked up from all the professionals I was forced to spend time with" You reply.
"My mom sang too!" Dave says, "Weird..."
"Look the sun is coming up" You say, pointing over the horizon where sure enough, the sun is rising over the river, "Its gorgeous out here."
"Thanks for taking me here Dave" You say as you get back into Dave's car, "It was like time was infinite watching the sun and stars like that."
"Sure thing! I better get you home though, you got the big game later" He teases and you groan.
"Don't remind me" You sigh, "I wish things could just be like that forever. We need to do that again. Promise?"
"Whatever you say princess" Dave says, starting the car, "I promise"
