"Where are you taking me?" You ask as Dave drives you through the winding back roads engulfed in seemingly complete darkness.
"You always ask so many questions." He says without answering your actual question.
"Come on Dave, seriously" You persist and he shakes his head.
"I cannot reveal my secrets, a magician never reveals his best tricks" He says in a level tone and you roll your eyes.
You don't say anything for a few minutes, until you arrive at your destination and once you realize where you are you are stopped in your tracks.
"Is this...are we by the docks again?" You ask as he takes his key out of the ignition.
"We sure are princess" He says with a twinkle in his eye, "Come on, lets get out on the hood, just like old times"
"Its winter Dave!" You say with a smirk and he rolls his eyes.
"Don't whine! I would never put you in harms way" He shouts and follows you out of the car, "Plus it's a warm snap, its not even below freezing."
Even so he grabs you each a few blankets from the truck bed and throws them over the two of you as you lay on the hood.
"You know, I've never been back here—not since that night" You say and he nods.
"Me too, actually." He says, "I tried once, some guys wanted to come down here and smoke or something but I couldn't do it. I made some shit up and left"
You stare up at the stars for a second before you speak again, "I think the moment I fell in love with you was out here. I know technically I was still with Drew then but being out here with you after such an amazing show, I don't know I felt something change"
"I thought the day I left for that European tour you left you told me you didn't love me?" He says in a curious tone and you shake your head.
"No, I mean come on Dave wasn't it blatantly obvious the entire time we were together that I was totally in love with you? I was crazy about you. When I said that I didn't love you I was hurt and upset and young, I just wanted to make you hurt as much as I did." You say, turning to face him and he bites his lip, looking deep in thought for a moment.
"I was horrible to you. Sometimes I think about that night and literally break into a cold sweat, the stuff I said to you was totally unforgiveable. I was such a selfish little shit" He says and you surprise even yourself by reaching out and touching his hand.
"I just want to make sure you know that even though we didn't end things on the best terms, I look back on that time, our first attempt at a relationship, so lovingly. You were so perfect to me Dave, you always treated me like a princess. I couldn't have asked for anything more from you, even in the end. I swear once I was old enough to appreciate us, I never resented you. You were the best boyfriend I'd ever had—like 99.9% of the time." You reply in a gentle tone and he chuckles lightly at the last part.
"I kicked myself so much for letting you go, especially the first few weeks. I'd had girlfriends before, so I thought I sort of knew heartbreak but I couldn't shake you. When I told Franz no to inviting you on tour I tried to convince myself you were like any other girl and I wouldn't be too upset without you but I knew from the moment I laid eyes on you that you were special Jules. I've always sort of known Julia, I've always sort of loved you" He adds in a slightly sheepish tone.
"I wish we'd been better to each other" You whisper into the darkness, staring into his eyes from across the windshield. Without warning Dave leans across the foot or two that separating you and presses his lips to yours.
