i finally looked up
and Midori met my gaze with something strong in her eyes.
i saw the city lights reflected in her pupils
as the train passed the living world.
"i like your hair short,"
she cracked a smile
and my heart clenched
as though my feelings would be thrown outward at any moment.
the train jerked to a halt
breaking our eye contact.
"thanks," i mumbled.
silence took its place again
until Midori placed a warm hand on my cheek
and turned my face back towards hers.
my heart leapt in my chest
as she opened her mouth to speak
her lips forming the words
but i barely registered what she was saying.
all i could hear was the blood rushing in my ears
and my breathing inside my head.
"-i hope you know,
you're not alone,"she was saying.
you're not alone.
the very words i said to Kohaku earlier today.
you're not alone.
and as Midori pulled me into a tight hug
and i absorbed the warmth
she held within
i finally believed those words might be true.
