trigger warning: self-harm, mentions of suicide

when mitch woke up, he didn't see scott. he immediately sat straight up and looked around, his heart rate picking up. "scott?" he called. had it all been a dream?

no. it couldn't have been. this was not mitch's house.

"scotty? where are you, baby?" mitch called again, nervously playing with the hem of his shirt. he heard the sound of soft sobs from behind a closed door, so mitch hissed out a curse, scrambling up and knocking on the door. "scotty? are you in there? please open the door." scott sobbed and brought the blade harder down on his arm, blood already flowing off his fingers and dripping onto the floor from several cuts on his arm. mitch chewed his lip nervously and tried the door. "scott, please," he said, his voice breaking. scott whimpered and moved away from the door, making cut after cut on his arm. his fingers were bloody and torn.

mitch forced back his tears and tried the door again, sobbing softly in relief as it opened. he immediately rushed inside and sobbed louder at the sight of scott. "scott, please. give me the blade," he said, trying his best to keep his voice steady. scott whimpered and shook his head, his hands shaking as he furiously dug it into his skin again. mitch stepped closer to him, though his steps were hesitant, not wishing to scare him. "please. don't do this." scott stared at mitch with tear-filled eyes, and slowly, he reached out to drop the blade in mitch's hand. "thank you. thank you," mitch whispered, making sure to throw the blade away. "here, l-let's get you cleaned up." he gently took scott's arm and ran it under the water of the sink, his heart breaking at how many scars littered scott's skin. scott watched silently, tears streaming down his cheeks.

mitch squeezed some of the hand soap on his fingers and began carefully cleaning the cuts. scott immediately let out a hiss as they began to sting, but mitch held his arm there and rinsed the soap off. "do you have any bandages?" he asked scott quietly, and scott sniffled as he shakily pointed to the drawer under the sink. mitch nodded slightly and got them out to begin carefully wrapping the cuts. scott sniffled again and rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, as his fingers were still bleeding.

as soon as mitch finished, he gently took scott's other hand to rinse off his fingers and then carefully put a bandaid on. "there," he murmured, kissing scott's cheek. scott blushed and wrapped his arms around himself. "go out and sleep, okay?" mitch said gently, but scott shook his head. "m-mitchy, the blood..."

"don't worry about that, sweetheart. i'll clean it."

"but-"

"no, no buts. go lay down, baby. i'll be there in a second."

scott made a small noise in the back of his throat, but obeyed, wordlessly walking back out to his bed and curling up under the covers. he held his arms closely to his chest. mitch made sure he was okay before he hurriedly cleaned the blood, then went back out after closing and locking the bathroom door. "why'd you do that, sweetheart?" mitch asked softly, sitting down on the edge of the bed. scott immediately crawled over and laid his head in mitch's lap, curling up. "i'm sorry, mitchy," he whispered barely audibly, and mitch let out a sigh, absentmindedly trailing his fingers through scott's hair. "it's okay. i'm not mad at you. i just... i thought you said you'd be fine." scott stayed silent and nuzzled against his hand. mitch swallowed the lump forming in his throat and laid down, and scott immediately crawled on top of him, hiding his face in his neck. mitch ran his hand along scott's back and closed his eyes. "hey, scotty?"

"hmm?"

"where are your parents?"

scott whimpered quietly at the mention of them and clutched tighter onto mitch. "out."
