Your hands are shaking as you open the window. It's raining outside, but it's not the rain that's got you freaked out. You like rain. What you don't like is the banging of the thunder that seems to shake your entire house, and the lightning that lights up the air as if the world is going to be lit on fire. You only hope Calum doesn't mistake your emergency call for the lightning outside.
"Y/N?" He appears at the window. He's wearing ninja turtle pajamas and his hair is all messy. Even his voice sounds groggy. "It's the middle of the night, why are you awake?"
"Cal," you say, your voice high pitched and shaky, "if the lightning would hit a house, do you think the people in it would die?"
"No," he answers immediately. "Are you afraid of thunderstorms?" You nod, feeling a bit silly because he obviously does not have that problem, but he doesn't judge you. Instead, he hops out of his window, onto the roof.
"You can't go outside during thunder!" you bring out, your voice on the edge of hysteria. "You could get hit by lightning and die, Cal! Please go back inside!" But he's already halfway over the plank and within seconds, he's inside your room, his pajamas wet. He shakes his head like a dog and some of the water drops hit you in the face.
"And now I'm safe again," he says with a smirk. "You're not gonna send me back through this weather, are you?"
You shake your head. The truth is, the weather is lowest on your list of reasons not to send Calum back. The fact that your heart beat has already seemed to calm down in his presence has a lot more to do with it.
"I have an idea!" Calum's eyes light up. "Let's build a fort!"
"A fort?" you frown. He's already grabbing pillows off your bed and chucking them on the floor.
"Yeah! If we're in a fort we're protected, and the thunder can't hurt us."
"Can't you just protect me?" you sigh, wrapping your arms around yourself.
"Yes," he answer completely seriously, "but inside the fort."
You make the fort and it turns out he's right; you instantly feel a lot safer, though it might also have something to do with the fact that you're sitting so close to him you can smell his shampoo.
"Once we have our own house we can build forts every day," says Calum proudly, and when he sees the confused look on your face, he laughs. "When we get married? You know I'm gonna marry you one day and then we have to have our own house."
"Oh yeah," you smile, and temporarily, you forget all about the thunder. "We're gonna get married! Cause we're best friends forever and ever."
"Yeah," he smiles, and he leans his head on your shoulder. "Forever and ever."
