Our lack of fear to the Lord is the beginning of our downfall. We did not fear Him when He commanded us through His Laws and commandments. We did not fear God through Adam and Eve who disobeyed Him to take of the forbidden fruit. We did not fear the Creator of All things when we gave in to daily temptations. We did not fear the One Whom we should tremble and prostate ourselves immediately when we sin. We did not fear Him when we question Him. We certainly did not fear Him when we doubt His existence, and much worse, to ask why He did not prove Himself to us.
The Creator needs to prove Himself to the created? That would be unheard of.
If not for His love, His mercy, His grace, and His condescension to deliver us, to reveal Himself to us, He would have no absolute need to come and redeem us on the cross. Another flood is clearly justified. Yet, being sinners as we are, we willfully take advantage of His condescending love, grace and mercy (of which we are undeserving at all counts), and we ignore or forget that we are before He Who created the universe, and He alone has the power to destroy us in both body and soul. (Mat 10:28: And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.)
Should we not tremble at His name? Should we not tremble in our unjustness and sin when we think of Him? Should we not run far from temptation when we remember His righteousness and justice? Should we not fear the sign of the Cross when we have given in to temptation and sinned? For it is only in the blood of the Lord Himself, that we cover our sins and iniquity, that we dare come before Him in prayer, and in this, speak to Him as a child would to a Father.
Would a child, deep in mischief and iniquity dare go up to the disciplining Father? And would such a child dare question the existence of the disciplining Father?
And if one says he does not believe in the supernatural horrors - the ghouls, the demons, the monsters, the bogeymen of the dark, and yet is afraid of the dark, or even wary of the dark, or mention or to call out for dark apparitions in the creepiest of places. Does such a man make rational sense? Such men should have no fear. But yet, if they fear, and dare not speak of ghouls in the dark, and truly do not believe of such apparitions, then the fear is nonsensical. If they do not believe, why do they fear?
But the same men can walk in creation itself and question the existence of a God. Such men have no fear of the Creator. They neither have wisdom (Psalms 111:10: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.) or knowledge (Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.). They fear not the Lord God, and they taunt Him. They taunt Him to show Himself whilst they are sinners. They taunt Him to prove His Own existence to them who are nothing before Him. They know not their own sinful state. They know not the awesome fearsome righteousness of the Lord God, and they know not what they ask, nor the consequences if the Lord God were to respond to them. They tempt God to bring on His righteousness and Justice upon them (Deuteronomy 6:16: Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.).
It is only in God's mercy, grace and love that He does not physically show Himself for us to look upon, bringing on His Justice and righteousness. For to His people, in the Holies of Holies, there is a curtain that did not allow His people to look upon His face (Exodus 33:20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.) Dare we in our iniquity, without the covering of the blood of Most High Lamb seek to see His face?
Oh, how far we have fallen when we sin and come to Lord as if we deserve forgiveness. How far have we fallen when we pretend and believe that His Righteousness and Justice are masked by His abounding grace, mercy and love? How far have we fallen when in our foolishness and iniquity that we ask to see Him!
Tremble before the Lord for we are sinners!
Tremble before the Lord for we are unworthy!
Tremble before the Lord for He is the Righteous Judge!
Tremble before the Lord when temptation and sin lurks in our minds!
Tremble before the very thought of the Lord when you doubt He is God!
In the fear of the Lord, there should be no doubt that He is there. There is no room for unbelief!!
When the Lord returns physically, we must tremble in fear and prostate immediately as Moses did (Deuteronomy 9:18 And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.). For in His anger, we might cease from Him! For Moses is the only one that spoke to the Lord face to face (Exodus 33:11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. ...). And if Moses, who alone spoke to God face to face, prostrated himself, what more shall we do, in our sin and iniquity expect? We should run and hide as Adam and Eve did when God went to Eden. But even in the blood of Christ, we need to remember that if there is anything to fear, it is the Lord Himself only. And whilst we need no longer fear for the consequences of our sin due to the redemption of Christ, we need to remember in our daily living to fear the Lord God so we can flee from sin and temptation. For He alone has all authority, all righteousness and all justice.
Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
