Chapter 4: Protect

Jayson’s POV

I recognized Hayley’s scent as she ran towards me, throwing herself onto my back in a giant energetic hug. But what I was unsure of was the scent of reminding me of summer that lingered behind her. As the smell became stronger something within my wolf awoke.

Protect. As crystal clear as a cloudless night the moon spoke into my ear.

I turned around with Hayley still attached to my back, jabbering on about something I was only half paying attention to.

But that’s when I saw her, white sundress rippling in the wind and dark hair that had a slight brown glow in the sun and steaks of purple gleaning from hidden layers. Then there was her eyes, if the ocean could set aflame to its waters her blue green eyes would have captured it perfectly. We locked eyes for a moment as she walked surefootedly towards Hayley and myself. But the next second later her expression was blank and her body started to fall limp towards the pavement.

I dropped Hayley off my back and leapt towards her, catching her top half before her head could hit the pavement and skinning my knees in the process. Her eyes remained open and glossy and her body motionless in my arms as Hayley bolted over towards her.

“OhMyGod!! Kiylee?!?! What just happened? She was completely fine a minute ago?” Hayley exclaimed as she fell to the ground with her knees tucked delicately underneath her.

That’s when the convulsions happened.  Kiylee’s irises slid into the back of her head, with her eyes still open her body started to jerk and twist on the ground and in my arms. It was like she was having a seizer.

Her Meraki, body’s magic life force flicked away and she went limp once again. I could see old scar marks on her arms that her Meraki shimmered away from even those with magic eyes.  One large scar was underneath the mark of the hunter on her left wrist.

Approaching footsteps drew me out of my thoughts.  A blond haired man was running towards the three of us. By his sent I could tell he was part elf and a member of the Council.

The man skidded to a stop and placed a hand on Kiylee’s forehead.  “It’s the sight, she is having a strong vision. We need to get her onto the grass so her body can start to rebuild its natural Meraki.

I picked her up and quickly bolted in the direction of the school’s baseball diamond and laid her on the grass.

The three of us sat down next to her and immediately we could see the Meraki returning to Kiylee’s body.  Then her eyes snapped back into focus, the irises glowing blue-green and her body learched forward like a greyhound being released from a races starting gate. She sprung to her feet but lost balance and fell to her knees breathing raggedly. In a sweeping motion she unsheathed a knife from the satchel on her leg and shakily stood poised to attack something that wasn’t there. Then her body betrayed her, and she swayed backwards and I moved forward to catch her in my arms.

Those eyes stared back at me in confusion and frantic desperation.

The blond haired man spoke. “Kiylee, what did you see?”

Her head turned towards the man.  “Caderyn? What’s happening? The sight- We have to save her- why the hell do I feel like shit?” She slurred her sentence into a conglomeration of subjects.

“Calm down young one.” Caderyn put his hand to her forehead. “Now think, what did you see?”

Kiylee gulped before slowing her breathing and spoke, “There was trees everywhere and the sun was starting to set. There’s a teenage girl with long flowing blond hair that is going to be killed by a man in a black cloak, if it hasn’t already happened yet. He had this strange knife and a pulsating stone and it was like I could see him take her soul from her body. She was asking for help!” Even in the heat of the sunlight I could feel a shiver run down her spine while I tried to help steady Kiylee.

Caderyn looked very ill at ease but kept his lips pursed together in a thin line while working his way through what Kiylee said.

“I’m so confused,” Kiylee continued. “I’ve never had a vision such as that before. I’ve had my insights while fighting and dreams. But this time it was like I completely left my surroundings and went to wherever the vision was.” Kiylee then raised her hand that wasn’t clenched around the knife she grabbed when she woke up from her convulsing vision. The other hand was clenched in a fist and Kiylee looked at it like she had never seen such a thing attached to her body before. With noticeable effort she opened her fingers to reveal nail marks on her palm so deep she was bleeding and an old bronze looking necklace that had an oval pendent with something etched into it.

Very slowly Caderyn pointed towards Kiylee’s hand. “Where did you get that from?” The words fell out of his mouth with confusion and worry.

“I don’t know, but I didn’t have it before my vision.” Kiylee looked up from her hand, glancing at me and for the first time assessing me with more than the confused bewilderment she had earlier. Then her eyes widened and she frantically glanced back to Caderyn before looking back at me. “You’re the boy from my dreams that turns into a black wolf.”

The air around the 4 of us seemed to spin with some strange energy.

Hayley gasped, making noise after a long period of silence.

Caderyn looked from Kiylee to myself with an apprehensive expression I could only half process.

All I could do was stair down at this girl in my arms, this girl that the moon was willing me to protect, this girl with blue green eyes that danced like the rippling waves of the ocean. I opened my mouth to speak, it was dry and my voice cracked, “Well, I am a werewolf, but I don't recall ever having my wolf introduced to you for you to know it's color…”
