"Hey! What the fuck are you doing?!" Dan shouted at the blue eyed man, a harsh look on his tired face. Novak casually dropped the papers he was reading on the desk next to him, then looked up at Dan.
"Dan Howell, you are being put under temporary arrest for the suspected kidnapping and or murder of (y/n) Howell and Winnie Howell, and for the attempted murder of Hazel Howell via alcohol poisoning . . ." The sound of Detective Novak reading over Dan's rights were muffled to him as the one of the officers pulled his arms behind his back and cuffed his hands together too tightly.
Dan couldn't do anything but stare blankly at Detective Novak as the man behind him fidgeted with the handcuffs. The two officers grabbed Dan's upper arms once more and began walking, followed by the detective. They ended up in front of a cell, with black, rusty metal bars and an overwhelming stench of sweat.
One officer unlocked the cuffs around Dan's wrists before pushing him into the cell, closing and locking the door behind him. The two men left, leaving Dan alone with Detective Novak.
Dan was still in shock. He couldn't form words, let alone full sentences. Novak stood outside the cell, staring him down as Dan stared at the floor.
"We're keeping you here until further notice. Until we have any evidence of your innocence, we have full rights to keep you under surveillance for the crimes you committed." The detective said, crossing his arms. Silence followed. Just as Novak was turning around to leave, Dan stopped him.
"Wait." Dan called, dry hands gripping the bars. His head was bowed, allowing his disheveled hair to cover his eyes. Novak turned on his heel, facing Dan again. He waited for Dan to continue.
"Are you married? Do you have kids?" Dan's voice was broken. He kept his eyes focused on the floor.
Novak seemed taken aback by Dan's question. He mumbled a quiet "yes", just loud enough for Dan to hear.
Dan slowly lifted his head, finally making eye contact with the suit clad man in front of him.
"What are their names?"
"I have a husband, Dean, and a daughter turning seven. Her name is Claire." Novak stated, shifting his weight between legs. There was a few seconds of silence before Dan continued.
"Do you know what it's like to miss them? And I mean truly miss them. Not just 'I had a business meeting and couldn't make it in time for dinner' or 'I had to work so I couldn't see your dance recital.' I mean not see your spouse for weeks on end because you have no clue where they are. Missing your daughters dance recitals because she's not there to be in them."
Novak stayed quiet, allowing Dan to continue.
"You have no idea what it's like. No fucking clue. You don't know what it's like to fall asleep alone and pray you won't wake up because if you do, you'll have to face another day without them. Seeing a father with his child, holding her hand and knowing that could be you if only you had been a minute earlier, her head would be on your shoulder as she fell asleep beside you. You have no fucking idea how this feels." Dan's voice grew angrier with every word. "You can keep me here as long as you want to, but every second you do, know that you are putting the lives of my wife and daughter in danger. You're killing them. You're no better than the bastard who took them."
Dan glared at Detective Novak, body shaking with anger as he gripped the bars with white knuckles. Novak stepped towards Dan, a neutral yet apologetic look on his face.
