"Well, Mrs. Howell, nothing seems to be seriously wrong, which is a good sign. Now, could you tell me what happens exactly when this problem occurs?" The doctor said to me while picking a plastic clipboard up off of his desk.
I said nothing, just stared down at my lap with my head in my hands, the sanitary paper on the doctor's table crinkling whenever I shifted my weight.
I really did not want to be here. I hated doctor's offices and hospitals and anything that reminded me of them.
"...Can I speak for her?" Dan asked after a few moments of silence. He reached from the seat he was sitting in and placed his hand on my thigh, just trying to comfort me. The doctor nodded and turned his body towards Dan.
Dan let out a quiet sigh and began to explain.
"Alright, well, the way (y/n) discribed it to me was almost like she suddenly had the life drained out of her. Her head started pounding, vision blurred, she couldn't even hold herself upright. She looked and felt really weak and tired, she had to lie down for a while before she was able to stand up again. She looked like a ghost, she was so pale and worn out." Dan told him.
The doctor scribbled some things down onto his clipboard before looking back at Dan and I.
"It seems to me that Mrs. (Y/n)'s body is just physically weak, or you could say feeble. You mentioned that she was once involved in a car accident, correct?" He asked.
Dan's breath hitched at remembering that event, his grip on my leg tightening. I reached my hand down and laid it gently on top of his, and he looked up at me before turning back to the doctor.
"... Uhm, yeah, she was... but that was over five years ago, why would that be effecting her now?" Dan questioned, looking at him quizzically.
"Not all symptoms are immediate. She could have started showing them within the next year, or within the next ten years. They must just be taking a toll on her body now." He explained. "You also said you had some problems with delivering your second child, right?" He asked, pushing his glasses up on his nose.
"Yes, there were a few complications..." Dan told him.
"This weak state is most likely caused by stress to the body and/or brain. Exercise, extreme cold or warm weather, or even yelling could cause your body to shut down, so you should try to take it easy. There isn't much I can do for the time being, unless it gets any worse." He said to me.
"Putting too much stress on your body could lead to serious problems, maybe some that are irreversible. I might even suggest spending some time in the hospital, maybe a month or two at the least-"
"N-no!" I stated, fairly loudly at that.
The two seemed surprised at my sudden urge to talk, they both peered over at me with puzzled looks on their faces.
"No..." I repeated, only quieter this time. "I'm not staying in a hospital..." I said softly, looking down at my lap once more.
"(Y/n), this is the fourth time this has happened in the past week. Your body needs to rest, and staying in the hospital would help." Dan said. He looked up at me, his eyes full of worry.
"I'm sick of staying in the same damn hospital bed for months at a time." I sighed, lifting my hand up to my head. "I'm not sitting in a hospital room while my kids grow up without me there. It's not happening, I'm sorry." I told them.
The doctor sighed and placed his clipboard down, then leaned up against the desk.
"Well, it is your choice (y/n), but there's always room for you here if you change your mind. Just be sure to take it easy and don't stress yourself out too much. Maybe stay indoors as much as possible, it is pretty hot outside." He said softly, giving a gentle smile.
"Yes, and we will be sure to call if anything changes. Thank you." Dan smiled at him before taking my hand and leading us out of the building.
