"Dan Howell, just the man I wanted to talk to."
I furrowed my brows, taking the phone away from my ear to check the number. When I didn't recognize it, I brought the phone back up to my face.
"I-I'm sorry, who is this?" I questioned, confusion evident in my tone.
"Really? I'd figured you would've had some clue as to who I am, considering all the incoming calls on your wife's phone."
I thought back. Back to when I was at the police station the first time after (y/n) was taken. The policemen had checked her phone and said there were a number of calls being made in and out, but they told me they were unable to trace the calls and gave the phone back to me.
After contemplating for a second, I remembered I had (y/n)'s phone in my pocket. I liked to keep it with me, just in case. I unlocked it and looked at the call history, and then it clicked.
"It's you." I said in a hushed voice, the realization finally dawning on me.
"Y-You're the one who was calling (y/n)'s phone before she was taken."
"Haha, you've finally caught up! Good job, Danny, I'm proud of you." The man laughed, sounding almost amused.
"Why are you calling me? Why were you calling (y/n)?" I heard myself getting angry, despite only having talked to this guy for a mere ten seconds.
"Woah there, fella, no need to get angry. I am calling solely to inform you."
"Inform me about what?" I questioned, already becoming uneasy about this phone call.
"What if, maybe, for some crazy reason, I were to know where your wife and daughter are?" His jagged voice sent shivers down my spine, but his words, nevertheless, caught me off guard.
"What? W-where?! Where are the-" I stopped myself from continuing. How do I know I can trust this random guy who called me out of the blue?
"Wait, how do I know you're telling the truth? Who the hell are you?!"
The man chuckled profoundly, then sighed.
"Ah, Mrs. Howell said the exact same thing when she was in your position. Dear, dear memories . . ." He trailed off, leaving a deafening silence between us for a few seconds.
"Well Mr. Howell, if you're so sceptical, why don't you come down and see for yourself?"
I was honestly considering his offer. I was beyond desperate to see my family at that point, so I was more than willing to do anything I could. Just as I was about to say yes, I heard a voice I've been longing to hear for days, mixed in with the background noise.
"N-No, Dan! Don't come here! D-don't-"
The voice was cut off by a soft thump, soon followed by a shriek. I then heard the man sigh again.
"Well, since this bitch doesn't let me have any fun --" the silence filled with the same noises and screams, "I guess you'll have to figure it out for yourself."
"(Y/n)! Oh my god, (y/n)! What the fuck did you do to her?!" My voice cracked as I held back tears.
"That's none of your concern. Don't worry that pretty little head of yours."
My blood boiled at being patronized by this asshole.
"So, since our plans were . . cancelled . . I guess I'll see you whenever you decide to show up. Later, Danny."
