What a shitty school.
There very obviously wouldn't be enough ice cream in a truck like that for a whole school. Plus that brand is probably not on a school budget.
The ice cream truck is less than four feet from the roof eave in a delivery door area that connects to the cafeteria though. That's very good. In fact we could literally jump on it, but in my condition that would hurt like a son of a bitch. The truck's driver side door is wide open though, and the back refrigerator door is hanging open on one side.
This truck should have a massive battery bank too if I salvaged it for other parts for other things. But commercial trucks were and are the last to have hybrid natural gas engines, which are the only types of fuel available from fossil fuel energies ever since gasoline was phased out. They only allowed that too because its hard to have battery banks for really heavy loads too.
That's a shitty deal meaning I won't be able to fuel this truck back up. And it will also be probably only usable for one or two runs.
I smashed the only undead here and then gave Ruth the signal.
It's now or never. We'll have to use the ice cream truck since we were cut off from the buses. And it probably only has two seats. That'll be awkward since Barbara is naked.
But the lunch room below us is crawling with zombies. We only haven't alerted them so far because there is natural noise from the lunch room kitchen because a blender has been running non-stop there for probably two days.
This is going to be so freaking close...there are more undead in that cafeteria than I've ever seen so far as we look through below us using the skylight. It's good that zombies aren't trained to look up and don't have good sensing abilities. They only seem to see what's ahead of them as long as you don't make noise or give them a reason to look up.
I'll have to move Barbara carefully. And this is going to be so freaking scary.
I hurriedly signaled just in time behind me to Ruth to approach quietly. When she sees the skylight and looks through, she too appears worried.
On the other side of the school where we were just a minute ago there is already a surging flood of undead trash coming up onto the roof still in our line of sight.
"We can't go back now. It's now or never," Ruth said now that she's closer and has abandoned guarding the ramp area.
"You'll have to help get Barbara in the truck while I hotwire it. We'll have to just hope that we can peel that thing out of here before they break the glass windows and doors on the lunch room cafeteria," I said.
"The doors aren't secure or locked from the inside. So that will be less time than you think," Ruth said worriedly.
We're also lucky there's mini patio roofing eaves that bridge the difference in roof heights between the ice cream truck's roof and our roof. But to do it we have to sort of slide down it and that's going to be fun for me with my bad condition and even more fun for Ruth trying to help Barbara down.
But Barbara's feet made a loud bang on the roof even before we could get out.
"Crap."
"I've got her. Run Jack!" Ruth said, while piling Barbara over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes. She then somehow manages to do the whole jump with no trouble, though she did look like she landed quite hard.
We both roll onto the roof, which has a drop and I somehow managed to slide down the front. We're also lucky there's no zombie in the truck, nor any gore. There's also perks of a diesel commercial truck like this is also even higher up off the ground and really heavy with a solid front end. It will be perfect for snowplowing zombies.
And maybe there will still be some ice cream in the back? Well...probably not if it's already been two days since this town went to hell.
I hit the door unlock. Then hit the front hood quickly. To do this you have to manage tweaking a spot under the hood while still messing with the steering column when you go to hotwire these things. And just our luck there are no car keys anywhere.
I managed to slam the hood down shut and get in. Ruth piles in with Barbara on top of her. We both shut our doors at the same time, but the little bitch zombies are already surging towards us like an ocean. We still had some good lead time but it was a very, very close shave.
I screamed I think. It's too late to not have them notice us and we're screwed.
Ruth locks the doors while I'm already trying to hotwire this thing. A few years ago they added more security to doing this but they are basically just extra wires. They also made it so you can do it without popping the hood for some models but not all, which is even funnier.
I would never know this if I wasn't a mechanic however.
I floored the gas pedal while the kids are trying to flood the truck. It's scary. We already have some of them on the truck and on the windshield. My heat is beating in over drive.
I can't believe we made it out of there.
Somehow I've got to shake them off before the little bastards figure out how to bust through the windshield. At least we got out of there with only like ten of the buggers on the vehicle instead of the whole two hundred that were in the lunchroom.
There's another problem too. The security clicker remote for opening the gate to my house is in the truck. Plus Barbara's clothes too...
I don't know if I have any clothes that will fit Barbara. I barely salvaged some make shift shorts and one of my sacrificed dress shirts for Ruth. And it's not like I can go to the mall.
