How to Date an Android Chapter 25

I'm so far in the clear, but it won't last. The three zombies haven't seen me yet.

I am so freaking scared...

The rate of having to dodge their little twisted movements doddering about clumsily is higher with three of the rabids moving about. So my situation is compromised if I really think about it.

It's really touch and go but I managed to use the drainage ditch for cover. It's demeaning and my clothes will be dirty as hell but hopefully I can get to the truck. I'm getting scraped up too.

The drainage ditch here isn't used much, which means it's full of dry sharp gravel rubble. Mostly only when the spring rains come; so for right now I can use it and I'm crawling but as I move forward all kinds of gravel are biting into me, while I inch forward.

Three feet...while my arms being grated like cheese on gravel.

Two feet farther...while my arms continue to sting...

Then I duck down. I have to lie still.

The one rabid is almost looking in this direction but not quite. He's sort of like at a bit less than ninety degress facing away...but its' close enough that he can see me with the corner of his eye if he's careful.

But what the hell is going on?

How can that have happened? I'd seen zombie movies for real. But how can zombies really be happening? Am I hallucinating, is one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind but the gravel biting into my skin and arms as I crawl is real enough.

I did take a lot of pain meds last night...I think I was in denial.

Wait...if they are rabids, zombies...whatever, then if I get scratched by the gravel will they smell the blood? Even seeing it in front of me I feel disbelief.

I almost had some gravel tear into me. There's no blood but the skin is really raw. I'm also relieved. But there's no alternative and I'm sweating bullets because this ditch is so thin and low that I worry they might see me across the street.

One of the rabids is...talkative? He's mumbling something and keeps bumping into the hedge; or is it groaning? But then the hedge starts poking him and so he's now thrashing about. His mumbling groans draw the two others closer to him. They start sniffing the air, trying to sense if anything is there or if the other rabid is just mistargetting.

I gain another three feet. Now I'm at the truck, but not at the best point to get into the back of the bed.

Whew!

Just three more feet left.

But after that I have to also crawl behind the back side of the truck, which won't be fun. Truck beds can be noisy too unless they have that polyurethane coating that protects them. Even then they can make a bit of sound.

My heart is pounding too.

The mumbling rabid starts grumbling like crazy and trying to bite the thorny hedge because of some kind of sensory reaction of him thinking something slashed him but he's only been pricked by rose bush thorns.

But it's to my advantage...

Sort of...

It's aggravated the other two rabids with him and now they are tearing up the hedge. That makes no sense either. There's nothing there. Right?
