How to Date an Android, Chapter 13 Part B
It's later in the day. A few hours have passed since before.
I've got a good head so far for what traits I think will be best. I think it was worth the wait though. I might have missed some things if I'd gone too fast. The customization thing had made things pretty rough too. And customization and picking traits and skills that you can actually use are where the power is.
I hit the datapad phone and put it on speaker phone so I can talk while leaning back in the recliner. Thank goodness for automated reclines...every story, I mean home, should have one.
"Mellifera, this is Jane your operator and secretary, how may I redirect your call?" the voice asked.
"I'd like it if you could patch me through to Barbara please," I said.
"No problem. I hope you have a wonderful day sir," the voice said.
Then I'm put on hold...
I hate being put on hold. Even with more technology that's actually gotten worse for people because more of them are on the phone now days even though they've invented more ways of trying to smoothen out phone calling from the old days.
About a minute later Barbara picks up.
"Jack is that you?" I heard her say. I'd momentarily spaced out since I wasn't sure how long I would be on hold.
"Oh hey Barbara. Thanks for not making me wait too long. And hi," I said back cheerfully.
"Hi. No problem. I'm glad things are progressing. I'm glad you are calling me," she said brightly. She sounds almost bubbly.
"So I'm ready to put in my order. I'm finally doing it. We're going to as you say, 'adopt' an android," I said.
"Oh you are? That's...that's good. I thought giving you a little time would get this worked out well. I knew you'd make a good decision," she seemed diplomatic.
"Then could we do that now? I'd like your help. Can we do it over the phone?" I asked.
"Sure, that'll work. It's more efficient than driving out, though I do want to see you," she chuckled.
"So ...what about the paperwork? At some point there is paperwork and like a contract or something right?" I asked.
"Oh I will send you that as soon as the call is done to your datapad. You aren't required to sign anything until right before delivery, but we send it early so there aren't any surprises in the money or anything to freak people out. The contract will be exactly as you see. No surprises," she said soothingly.
"Good. People don't like surprises," I replied.
"Nobody does Jack," she said.
"So you understand me that if I see something funny in the contract I'm not blind enough to gamble my life away," I said to warn her.
Actually I suspected if there were a surprise that in the dollar amount that might be it. I was still hating myself for not wanting to see the paperwork earlier. But after I saw Barbara for the first time I confess her looks had messed with my head just a little bit.
