"Ruth, we have to use plan B," I called back. I also motion for Barbara to back up. Even though, she's in safe mode she gets it somehow.
"What?!" she yelped.
"Yeah, you heard me," I muttered.
"You mean the buses? I didn't think we'd use those, but they might be helpful and I'm glad we thought of a backup option before doing all this," she stated.
"Yeah, there should be one somewhere that's close enough to the building that we can reach. There must be something there in those vehicles on the other side parking lot," I said.
"Yeah but no keys. Jack, please hurry. I'm worried for Barbara," she protested.
"Me too." The lump in my throat is threatening to make me unglued. I stifle it for now.
"Go," she motioned.
"Dammit. I like that truck too. We're coming back for it later if we can't have it now," I said angrily. We're already going across the roof the other way with me trying to go as quick as the slow safe mode in Barbara will allow.
I also notice her safe mode program isn't as fast as I'd like at her moving.
"Maybe you can teach me how to drive then?" Ruth suggested. She smiled big, in spite of being in the middle of zombie splashing.
A human wouldn't smile in the middle of that would they? I guess it's OK. They are just zombies. But still they are dirty filthy zombies.
"That'd be nice," I smiled. But my smile disappeared quickly.
We end up having to move quickly. Being up here after nightfall would be a deathtrap.
But it's awkward to figure out when to have Ruth move. She's literally keeping us alive by blocking the ramp made out of rubble.
We decide she'll have to give us a head start while I scout ahead taking Barbara in energy saver mode with me. But that also means Barbara is vulnerable too in not just speed. Her current mode wouldn't even register a defense mode I think. I have to defend both myself and her too at the same time.
I just pray nothing else is on the roof.
The danger of the sound travelling through the roof is big too if we're careless in how we move.
But we do have the advantage of knowing where the buses are at least and the layout of the school roof...mostly.
Ruth has us pre-arranged to do a both arms up for ten seconds straight signal for when it's time for her to run to me on the roof. At the time neither of us know what will happen with the kid zombies. They'll probably surge up the roof like cockroaches in mating season.
I reached another atrium building extension that branches out with its own classrooms in a plus shape, but it's a difficult situation.
This atrium roof is closest to the buses but there's a fence in the way which appears to be locked because of some kind of school security rules.
We have to backtrack to another atrium. This one is farther but we got lucky.
There's a Schwann's ice cream truck that was pulled up next to the cafeteria.
That doesn't make sense either. Why would a truck like that be at a school?
I thought school lunch is on contract with only certain government contracted groups supplying the school's food...unless this is under the table for like the principal and his staff stealing from the kids' lunch money?
That wouldn't happen would it?
Wait...yes it would. It definitely would and could happen when a society is hell bent on leaving other people behind in wages and lifestyle to have cool toys and hiding money that doesn't belong to them.
