"They must be hiding...the survivors I mean. They would know it's not safe to go outside," she said.
"We'll find some of them don't worry," I said.
Although this idea of setting up the car for remote control is wonderful, one of the problems is that I didn't have an interactive sound system carrying my signal to that car. I did have the microphone carrying sound to me, but not both ways.
So even if I were to find someone, we wouldn't be able to talk yet. Even if I were to put two way radios in the car, someone would still have to man them.
Is it just me or is the engine of this car sounding a bit louder? I think I've stressed the engine from so many impacts. There's also the problem of something sounds like its rubbing against the tires like maybe a part of the fender paneling getting pushed in from some of the impacts. Right now it's not doing much to stop me from driving, except that it's just annoying as hell and makes me worry more. There's also a bunch of dried gore on the front hood of the car.
So we diverted the car to go up to check out Craig's house.
It wasn't hard to find, since it was about a mile from here. By studying the map I can also see why he ended up on my street. My house is right between the high school and his house following a line, and he probably uses the same route every single day. He'd probably been either walking home or ditched his back somewhere on the way to find a place to hide.
But it wouldn't hurt to confirm. If it's not his then there might be another survivor near by.
"Ruth?" I called out.
I go over this same street twice. There's a detail I have to confirm.
"Yes?"
"Ask Craig if he rides a blue and white Schwinn bicycle with two mirrors on the front handlebars and a steel padlock and chain hanging down, also wrapped around the handlebars; and if he has a black backpack. I think that's a north face brand but I'm not too sure from this angle," I said.
It's just a hunch. I could be wrong. Heck there could be tons of bikes out there but even if its just this one to check it might build trust with them.
But I doubted someone would ditch a bike like that right in the open and it was right around the way to his house. This bike was obviously ditched right next to a fence from someone looking for higher ground and it looks like a really new bike not something someone would sacrifice easily. It was also ditched in an area that's by a main road that is walled up with only backyards facing the street from the other side of the fence; which they designed that way probably because nobody would want all the noise or have their front yard bordering a place where their kids would get ran over at 50 mph. In short, the place the bike was ditched at appears to be someone chased by zombies and there are no bodies.
While I'm waiting for her to come back I circle the car a few times in a cul de sac area not far from here and then run over two more zombies. It was then when I double backed on my own area that I realized I had a few zombie followers. I circled around another deserted street area and then lost them around a corner.
By then Ruth came back, "Jack you were right. That was Craig's bike. He even remembered the decal of the brand which he drew for me. He doesn't want us to risk our lives for it so leave it there?"she said.
"Sweet. It means we're building our skills. One more piece in the puzzle," I said.
"I don't understand the human reference to puzzles," she said giving me a blank stare. I think she's also staring at me romantically because of her programming. Ruth actually stares at me a lot. I don't think my looks are all that special.
