Ok, I 'm not actually sure whether Adrien has chess classes. I know he has basketball, fencing, Chinese, photoshoots and piano, but I'm not sure about chess. For the purposes of this one-shot, he does have classes for chess. Which sounds stupid. I mean, who has classes for chess?

Adrien Agreste, of course.

And don't worry, this isn't cliche.

Ladybug had enough with Chat. He thought he was so smart, didn't he? With the puns and the flirts.

She had a plan to take him down a notch.

After all, she was Ladybug, master of strategy.

How could she lose to Chat Noir, of all people, at chess?

Half-an-hour later, Ladybug was sorely regretting her choice.

"Checkmate!" Chat called out with glee, and happily took her king.

It wouldn't have been that bad if it was their first game.

But, unfortunately, it was their fifteenth. How on Earth was she supposed to compete with someone who could win fifteen times in a row in thirty minutes!

Ladybug sighed.

"I give up, Chat. How are you so good at chess?"

Chat smirked at her.

"I've had a lot of practice."

Ladybug's eyebrows rose.

"Well, your parents must be nice, willing to play chess with you for who knows how long."

Chat Noir stopped fiddling with the King.

"Yeah...nice parents..." he mumbled.

Ladybug knew she had said something wrong. But she wasn't going to pry.

After all, it was her decision to keep out their personal lives.

"So, are you happy Kitty?" she grinned.

"Finally winning something over Ladybug?"

Chat smirked at her.

"You'll always win my heart, M'Lady."

Ladybug groaned.

"Goodbye, Chat."

Yep. She regretted it.

Especially since his ego was now unmistakably bigger.

Erm...I couldn't resist, so I made an alternate reality of this one-shot! I like this one better.

After all, it was her decision to keep out their personal lies.

But he looked so sad...

"Chat...what's wrong?"

Chat looked at her, confusion swirling in his bright green eyes.

"But you said no involving our-"

Ladybug interrupted him.

"Just tell me."

Chat sighed, and picked up the queen.

"My father's like this queen. He has money, and he has power. He controls me. Whatever he wants me to do, I do it. He has the authority to do that."

He then picked up the pawn.

"I'm...well, I'm the pawn. I do whatever my father desires. But the pawn is sometimes one of the most valuable pieces on the chessboard. Just because they're small, doesn't mean they're worthless. I'm like that too. I can strike back when I need to. I convinced my dad to let me go to school."

He carefully placed the pawn and queen on the chessboard.

"The only reason I'm really good at chess is because I have classes."

He shrugged.

"It was one of my father's requirements. 'My son should excel in all areas of life, no matter how trivial'. Those were his exact words when he told me. I've already got so many things on my schedule. I have barely any time to myself. The only time I really have is when I'm Chat Noir."

He then picked up the rook.

"When I'm Chat Noir, I have more freedom. I can be whoever I want to be. But I still have restrictions. Like the rook can only move in a straight line, I can't stay Chat forever. Sooner or later, I'll have to return to the lonely world that is my civilian life."

He set the rook down and sighed.

The mood had dampened considerably.

Chat then shook himself, and gave Ladybug a grin.

"Well, M'Lady, I best be going. In fact-"

He looked at the time on his baton.

"What a coincidence! I have chess! Bye, Bugaboo!"

And with that, he jumped away.

Ladybug set her lips in a straight line.

If Chat had seen that expression, he probably wouldn't have come to patrol.

Because he knew that Ladybug was stubborn. And once she had an idea, she wouldn't budge.

This bug was getting answers.

No matter the price.
