"Whatever. Tough luck," he said.
She tried to go around him to try to let James go, but Steve stood in front of her. He even takes a few punches to the chest while she's venting herself emotionally and crying.
"It's not his fault," she cried.
"It's triage and he wouldn't want hurting someone to be on his conscience anyway," I said. "I'm sorry."
"Well screw you. Nobody asked you!" she yelled.
"If you keep being that noisy I'll kick you out into the street kid. Quiet is safe, loud brings danger. That's how those things found out you were in that house," I said.
"What? They did not," she objected in pure denial. She looks like she wants to force a standoff with me.
"Yeah they did. In fact I was right outside your house when you started drawing them in when you started screaming and yelling. Plus whatever you did before then. So if you make noise here, I'll put you outside and not protect you," I threatened.
"Fine!" she said defiantly while glaring at me.
She's obviously spoiled and probably because of her looks.
Steve rolls his eyes. "Sorry, sir. Please don't kick us out."
"We're good but our survival rests on her being quiet and not unchaining your infected friend," I said.
"I'll take care of that," he said.
"Good, I have one more job for you. See that bucket of spray paint cans over there in the corner?" I asked.
It's not unusual for me to have people ask for small touch ups on their cars, even though I'm not a full blown body shop service. I don't like the fumes from paint either, actually.
"Yeah? What of it?" he asked confused.
I need you to spray that stuff over all the shop windows and stuff so that when night comes if someone turns on a light it won't kill us all. Try to also cover up any gaps that could leak light to the outside," I said.
"That sounds reasonable. Very reasonable in fact," he said.
"I'll help," Sarah said while wiping a tear.
"Fine, but don't let her within even five feet of the bitten kid," I said. Somehow it sounds like they are too agreeable. Do I dare trust them?
"Got it," both of them said at once.
"You sure? If she goes within five feet of him, then slap her," I said.
Both of them looked shocked.
"Well aren't you going to help us too?" Steve asked.
"I have to call Barbara. When both of you are done, then I want you to check the shop to see if there's any cracks that light can escape out of if the light is turned on. Check it several times and approach it from the idea of you may have missed something each time. Be thorough on this and do a good job, since your safety depends on it. And don't take your eyes off that bitten kid while you're in here. One of you needs to have a visual and make sure he can't escape and know ahead of time if he's going to change," I said.
"You sure are demanding," the girl said with her arms crossed.
"Not demanding, just want to survive like you do and if you hadn't noticed this is one of the few properties on this street, no entire block even that has a fully enclosed fence all around the property tall enough to keep a real threat out," I shrugged.
"Any chance you've gotten something to eat?" Steve asked hopefully.
He's not a bad kid. It's hard to believe they are brother and sister.
