It's also true that I had a weird feeling about Val. She seemed kind of wild compared to even both humans and androids and calloused in some ways.

"Shut it down. This...murder is wrong," I said.

"Jack? What?" Val is confused too.

"Go on shut it down. We're not going to do this," I urged. I needed to sleep. This was a big disappointment and I felt too tired to even stand up anymore. Even if I wanted an android I can't be a party to doing something wrong.

When suddenly Val stood up... I heard her footsteps for awhile and then she had a hand on my shoulder, "Stop Jack, it's not like you think."

"It isn't? I don't want to be party to murder," I said.

"It's not murder," she said.

"You don't think murder is murder if it's an android?" I asked.

"That's not fair Jack. We're doing the best we can," she said. She looks a bit embarrassed.

"Look there's been a misunderstanding here. I promise we wouldn't do something like that," finally she looked me in the eyes. This is the only time she's looked at me directly.

"Perhaps what I said was misleading. I wanted you to be mindful of our sacrifice but the words I used were too strong," she said carefully.

"If someone were to steal from an android it would be stealing. If it was forced sex then that would still be rape, so wouldn't murder still be murder?" I said.

She paused and then bit her lip while glaring at me. "We don't have infinite time for this Jack. Trust me, I have to finish the coding now before the window closes then I can explain," she protested.

"Find another way," I said.

She went back to her keyboard; still looking pouty. "You might have just screwed yourself over Jack. Maybe you will get nothing now." She punched one of the keys with finality and turned her datapad off.

"So you are giving up?" I asked patiently.

"I need to think. Also the longer my datapad is on the more they'll get suspicious. I'm not mad," she said while still looking pouty like a teenager. Right, she's not mad, just pouty.

"You're kind of odd for an android," I said. This was true; actually the whole time she'd been here she was pouty. I wondered why.

"You think so?" she brightened up. It looked almost like she was happy.

Androids can be weird sometimes too.

"Well can't you use a 'VIN number' from something that isn't made yet? Then we wouldn't have to have you guys murder something and steal its VIN," I said.

She paced for a bit thinking about it, "that would be difficult. We could try to change it around. Hmm..."

She was quiet for a bit longer. Then suddenly she snapped her fingers. "OK, my probability calculation does indicate some increased chances of success if we do it your way actually and then we wouldn't have to scrap someone. For starters, there's actually more security checks in the later stages of manufacturing. So this can be to our advantage," she said.

Since she's going along with it, I'm sort of ignoring the fact that she sounded like she was going to say they were going to scrap someone.

"So less security means less chance getting caught?" I said.

"Correct. But there are still some other problems. This whole operation is going to be touch and go," she said.

"OK, like what?" I asked.
