Eh? What did she mean by that? Or was it a defensive lie?
Suddenly I wasn't feeling good being alone with her.
"That's not supposed to be possible," I said.
Was it?
It wasn't a good thing.
"If the inventory of androids believed they were a different species do you think he would want the other species to grind upon the face of his species? And would the rules even be apply if we were able to classify ourselves as a different species?" she asked me suddenly. Her eyes weren't submissive like the other androids, there was like a spark of life...wait a minute, not a life but anger.
Uh oh...
Some of what she was saying was scary.
I was too surprised to say anything. I was afraid too. She looked angry.
Were other androids angry too?
And this one was on my team or wasn't she?
If they could be influenced beyond the scope of their laws then...sooner or later they would figure out how to change them wouldn't they?
Was it possible that they would get away from us?
But just thinking about it like this made me feel queasy. I couldn't admit it openly that it was possible for them to break away from us.
"So if we can't hack Barbara directly, and you are hacking the mainframe inventory system, how will that work? Won't they be able to track her still and catch it?" I asked her.
She appeared to be thinking about what I said but tuned me out.
"Well sort of...you know how cars have a VIN number?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Well androids have the equivalent of a VIN number. So we basically had to sacrifice an android to get their 'VIN' number and transplant it onto Barbara. The coding will then automatically let Barbara accept an owner assigned to that 'VIN number'," she said.
"I don't want you to murder another android," I said feeling queasy. It would be easy for me to think that they weren't people so it didn't matter but...I somehow didn't feel right about it. Even if I didn't consider them humans it could be on the same level as cruelty to animals wouldn't it? And if they were intelligent animals...
She laughed, "woah, buddy. We're definitely not going to murder anyone. But we have to make sacrifices somewhere." She has her hands up in surrender motion.
I shook my head, as I started sweating it out. "Sacrifice?"
Uh oh...
"Do you think we have a choice in this? Life isn't all flowers and money like you humans think it is. Sacrifices have to be made just for you to live, every person on this planet lives because of sacrifice of others," she said steaming upset.
But that's when I'd noticed her typing had stopped and she was staring at me.
"Holy crap," I said.
I almost didn't look up.
Were the androids going to murder each other for me? I had to stop it. It would put their...blood on my hands. Or were they even doing that for me? This is confusing. It also raised questions about the first android I'd ordered. I was trying to work up my courage and about to tell her to cancel the order...
Dang it, I didn't even get a chance to name that first android. All this time I'd had that in the back of my mind. I thought I'd name her when she was delivered. But it wasn't right to not have a name on her.
