88. Retourne — Losing Hope

Into the shadows of the soul,
I walk the road of pain and sin;
This world of circumstance destroyed
My chances of a better life.

I walk the road of pain and sin,
Teetering on the brink of fate
Along the borders of desire
To keep things going as they are.

This world of circumstance destroyed
The times I had of happiness,
Because the words of other men
Now sway the minds of everyone.

My chances of a better life
Are shattered on the wheel of time,
On which the hammer of our fears
Slams down upon our waning hopes.

(To be continued...)

A/N: The Retourne (Latin: retorn = return), like much French verse from the Middle Ages, is written with a refrain. However unlike verse of that same period, it is written in 4 unrhymed quatrains, which makes it suitable for short narratives.
