25. Ghazal — War Between Brothers

Remember we would play pretend for war;
We'd play around, the best of friends, for war.

Imagine you and me amid the gore,
Surviving through our desperate bid for war.

We'd get along, as friends unto the core,
As if our friendship was the glue for war.

As time went on, you thought our game a bore,
A waste of time (you did proclaim) for war.

You said, as I was then dismayed, "What for?"
And went away and me betrayed for war.

The days of fun are dead and gone, no more,
My battle plans now schemed upon for war.

You say you'll never fight me anymore;
Your love for peace is greater than for war.

I warn you, Fox, as you repair your door,
I will deploy my troops—prepare for war!

A/N: The ghazal is a poetic composition of two-line couplets, usually 4-10 in number. It consists of a refrain repeated at the end of every 2nd line of each couplet except the 1st couplet. Each couplet is a complete unit that can stand alone as a separate poem. All couplets have the same meter of 7-13 syllables, and the last couplet includes the poet's name or pseudonym. Traditionally each couplet is rhymed and even uses internal rhyme, but most examples in English don't require it. The above example shows the traditional form practiced in Iran, Pakistan & India.

Meter: Iambic pentameter
Rhyme: AA aA aA aA... or AA xA xA xA...
