My thoughts continued contradicting each other for the rest of the walk. After a quick 10 minutes, I was back at the police station. I opened the glass door and went in.
As soon as the door shut behind me, a man wearing a black suit with a blue and black striped tie walked over to me. He had deep blue eyes and chocolate brown hair, which he was running a hand through as he approached me.
"Mr. Howell, I'm Detective Novak. It's nice to meet you, I'm sorry about the circumstance." He apologized, holding out his hand for me to shake.
"Ah, thank you." I replied, shaking his surprisingly sweaty hand. "So, uh, what did you need to talk to me about?"
"Follow me." Novak motioned for me to follow behind him as he began walking away. I started following him, quickening my pace to match his.
Novak led us into what I thought was an interrogation room, at least that's what it looked like in a series of crime shows on television. He stopped in front of the open door and let me go in first, then followed after me and shut the door behind him.
The room was composed of two chairs on opposing sides of an industrial metal table. There was a mirror, which, if my knowledge on crime drama was correct, was a double-sided mirror that more than likely led to another room. The only light in the room was emitting from a sole window on the wall adjacent to the mirror.
"Take a seat, Mr. Howell." Novak motioned to the chair facing the mirror. I slowly walked over to it, confusion clear on my face. As I sat down, a police officer entered the room and stood just inside the doorway, arms crossed over his chest. Novak took the seat across from me and laced his fingers together, arms resting on top of the table.
I sat awkwardly with my hands in my lap, fiddling with the sleeves of my jacket while waiting for someone to explain to me what exactly was going on.
Novak let out a sigh before beginning to speak.
"Mr. Howell, as you know, we have been working the case involving your daughter and now your wife for the last two months," he began, moving his hands around for effect. "and so far we haven't any leads. But, I should let you know, you are our prime suspect for this case at the moment."
I could almost feel the anger boiling up inside of me at that point. Were they serious? They seriously thought I had kidnapped my own wife and daughter?
"Are you kidding me? You really think that I could be behind this?" I questioned, raising my voice at the man.
"You could be. That's for us to figure out." He replied calmly, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms.
"You have gotta be joking." I grunted, almost laughing while leaning my elbows on the table in front of me and rubbing the back of my neck.
"Don't you find it odd that nobody else saw Mrs. Howell leave the apartment that night?" Novak asked me, raising one eyebrow.
"It was the middle of the night, almost three am! Nobody's going to be outside that late!" I told him, trying to contain the volume of my voice.
"We asked the tenants above and below your apartment, and none of them said that they heard any yelling or screaming, despite what you told us when we first interviewed you." He said, leaning forward and meeting my gaze.
"It was the middle of the night, they were probably all sleeping! What does that even prove?!" I shouted, standing up and pushing my chair back.
Novak stood up as well, leaning his hands on the table.
"Sit down, Mr. Howell. We're not done yet. Not by a long shot." He said, staring at me. We glared daggers at each other before I angrily sat back down, pulling my chair closer towards the table.
