The pope is a descendant, of sorts, of Saint Peter, the first pope.
The popes in the past were mostly good, some of them not so much for quite strange reasons, but the lot of them did what they were supposed to do.
The pope is required to:
Spread Jesus' message of love throughout the world, even to non-Christians. Everyone should feel His love.
Lead the Church.
Basically, that is all. He carries on the work of Jesus and the Apostles in the best way he can.
