On the day of the surgery, my mum took a day off work. I didn't get a wink of sleep the previous night. You never showed up, not even after I stopped counting.

The surgery was set for ten in the morning. My mum held my hand the entire morning. "You'll be fine," she kept repeating. It felt like she was comforting herself more than she was reassuring me, but I didn't point it out.

I kept waiting. I paid attention to every single sound. Where were you? I was sure that you would show up before the surgery. You had to. You promised me.

I never stopped waiting. Not when I was wheeled into the surgery room. Not when I was placed on the surgical table. Not when anaesthesia was injected into me.

But you never showed up.
