Her mom just stood there arms crossed. Cass had wondered what it would be like to see her mom again.

This was not what she had expected.

"Cassandra." Her mom was rooted to the spot, motionless.

Cass just looked at them. Once the shock subsided she said to her dad, "Have you been in touch with her all this time?"

Her dad responded by turning off the TV. He never did that.

"Why don't you sit? You too Helen."

"What is going on?" Cass said it in a clipped barley controlled voice. Her eyes were wide as she crossed her arms.

Her mom pursed her lips and continued to not move. Her dad was the only one who sat.

"We've tried to protect you. With me around it would have been easier for-"

"Helen! We can't just go and say it! Not like this." Her dad stood and paced.

"Then you explain it my dear." My dear sounded more like a challenge than endearment.

"You are special Cass." He looked like that was explanation enough.

This was crazy. They knew. "You knew about my dreams, the visions?"

Her dad nodded and took a step towards her.

She held her arms up. "Stay away from me. Both of you. All this time you never once tried to help me. You've let me dream of death my whole life and you never once told me it was okay, or why! When I told you about mom leaving you made me think I was crazy."

Her mom spoke quietly, "We handled it wrong, yes. We thought the less you knew the better. That without understanding the gift wouldn't develope. I had hoped that medication might help, but it seemed to have no affect."

"It made everything worse. I had no control at all over any aspect of the visions." Cass wasn't sure why she volunteered this information.

Her mom ran her hands down her crossed arms. "I never had a childhood. They found me when I was very young. I wanted different for you. The life of a mystic is not easy."

"Mystic?"

Helen flinched as if it pained her to say, "Oracle, Pythia. We have been blessed by Apollo himself."

The words struck a chord with Cass. She was a Pythia, a high priestess. "As in Delphi?"

"Yes. Now you must come with me."

"Not likely."

"Cassandra, your training must begin. You will need my help to understand and control your gift. They are coming for you, so you need to be ready."

"I'm not going anywhere with you."

"I know I am a stranger and I would have stayed away forever if things had been different."

"What changed?" Cass took a step back.

Her mom finally looked her in the eyes, "You met your soul mate."

I've got to ask - did you know Parris and Cass were soul mates? :) Vote if you are excited for the next chapter! -LM
