*Trisha*
"Trisha."
It's been a long time since Paul has called me, which means only one thing. Something's wrong.
"Pull over," I demand, and Evan knew to do it right away by the sound of my voice. He quickly maneuvered the SUV to the side of the road.
"What is it? Is it Nate?" My heart begins to pound heavily, consumed by the daily worry that Nate's has stopped.
"No. Trish."
I should feel relieved, but the way Paul paused makes it clear that something is still wrong.
"Paul???"I keep my gaze fixed ahead as the cars speed past us, while Evan's eyes remain locked on my face.
"James. It's James. You need to get to the hospital. Now." Paul's voice cracks, and my heart shatters.
"Oh God." I drop the phone.
I don't remember much of what happened next. I think maybe I went into some type of emotional shock. I'm not sure. I do remember telling Evan to "Drive as fucking fast as you can right fucking now."
I also remember calling Jonah. Not having any information other than to get to the hospital right away. I imagine Jonah called James's sisters as well as Lindsay. I don't remember the rest of the car ride. We just appeared at the front entrance of the building. I don't even remember unbuckling or getting out of the car. But I do remember running. Through the halls of the hospital. Bumping into patients, nurses, and doctors on my way to where James was. Evan keeping up with my pace.
And now-
Here I am.
I skid to a stop, my breath hitching at the sight of Jonah and Casey hunched on the bench, their faces hollow with grief. It's in their eyes when they look up at me. The weight of what waits beyond that door they are sitting across from. James is in there.
"What happened??" I bend over, putting my hands on my knees, trying to catch my breath. Up ahead, I see Nate and Paul talking to Dr. Giovanni. Dr. Giovanni? James's Neurologist?
"Seizure. A bad one." Jonah answers with a shaky voice. "Nate is talking to the doctor right now. Trish, this.... this doesn't look good." He manages to choke out. I suddenly feel lightheaded and grab onto the bench they are sitting on.
"Here. Sit." Casey slides into Jonah, providing enough room for one more person. I feel Evan grab my forearm and guide me to sit on the bench. That's when I see him. Straight across from where we are sitting. The door is open. Julia is by his side, holding his hand, sobbing. My hand covers my mouth as I take in the sight. James, lying in the hospital bed, unconscious. He's hooked up to monitors, but I can't read the numbers from this far away.
"Oh God!" I cry out and then hear Julia begin to wail.
"Where are you, James?" Julia's voice carries out into the hallway. "You need to come back. James, I need you to come back to me, ok? I know you can do this. You've done it before. Please, James, don't do this to me. I can't lose you. I can't do this again!"
A raw, agonized sob tore from Julia's throat. A sound so visceral, so wretched, that Nate and Dr. Giovanni jerked toward the room in alarm. The crowd approaching hesitated for just a breath, then turned to each other in a ripple of panic before breaking into a frantic sprint.
Lindsay, Trevor, and three of James's sisters come in together wearing the same pain-stricken expressions on their faces. All of them turn and stare into the room in shock. Five minutes later, Jeremy jogs down the hall.
