He laughed bitterly, shaking his head. “But every time I tried, something got in the way. Someone was always watching. Always listening.”
I stared at him, my heart pounding in my ears.
“Why?” I finally managed to whisper.
Han Wool met my eyes.
“Because they knew.”
“Knew what?”
“They knew that I loved you.”
The air left my lungs.
Han Wool let out a slow breath, stepping closer. “And they knew that if I remembered you, I’d go back to you.”
I swallowed hard.
“And they couldn’t let that happen.”
I shook my head, my voice shaking. “But…why?”
“Because they needed me with Harin,” he said, his voice bitter. “Because our families—our fathers—they already decided my future for me, their next experienment.”
My stomach twisted.
I stared at him, my pulse hammering.
“What experiment?”
Han Wool exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. “I wish I could explain it to you, but I don’t know, Ye Na. That’s why I’m acting. That’s why I had to go along with this whole thing.”
I narrowed my eyes. “What do you mean you don’t know? What kind of experiment are they running that involves you pretending you don’t know me?”
His fingers curled into fists. “I only have bits and pieces. Fragments of things I overheard. But I think…” He swallowed. “I think it has something to do with our genes.”
My stomach twisted.
“Our genes?” I echoed, my voice wary.
Han Wool nodded slowly. “And…I have a suspicion that it has something to do with us having a baby.”
I lunged at him. “DON’T YOU DARE!”
Han Wool barely managed to grab my wrists before I could smack him across the face.
“Ye Na, wait—”
“WHAT THE HELL DID YOU JUST SAY?” I shrieked, struggling against his grip.
“Calm down—”
“Calm down?” My voice pitched higher. “You just casually dropped having a baby into the conversation like you were talking about the weather!”
Han Wool sighed, his grip loosening slightly. “I said I suspect it, not that it’s a fact.”
A baby.
Not just any baby—a baby with Harin.
“Unbelievable,” I muttered, shaking my head. “You’re just casually dropping this into conversation now?”
“Ye Na—”
“And that’s what you’ve been so afraid of?” I cut him off, my voice rising. “You knew something like this was happening, but instead of telling me, instead of trusting me, you just—what? Played along? Acted like nothing was wrong?”
His jaw clenched. “I didn’t play along.”
“Oh, really?” I let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “So you’re saying you weren’t nodding along while they planned your perfect future with Harin?”
