By the time I got home, the sun was already dipping below the horizon.
I showered, letting the hot water wash away the tension from the day. My muscles ached, the lingering reminder of what had happened in the cafeteria. Of the stares. The whispers.
By now, everyone had probably heard about it.
I stepped out, towel-drying my hair as I pulled on a white T-shirt, layering it with a loose dark blue and black checkered shirt. It hung comfortably over my shoulders, the sleeves slightly oversized. I paired it with black loose-
fitting pants, letting my damp hair fall freely down my back.
The moment I sat on the bed, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I hesitated, then answered. "Who is this?"
A pause. Then-
"You should come outside."
A man's voice. Low. Calm.
I frowned. "Not interested."
"You might want to reconsider."
I was about to hang up when I heard it.
A scream.
Sharp. High-pitched.
A girl's voice.
The blood in my veins turned cold.
"Who is that?" I asked, my fingers tightening around the phone.
The voice on the other end chuckled. "Come find out."
Another scream. Muffled. Then a struggle.
"You have ten minutes," the man said. "Or she dies."
The line went dead.
I stood there, staring at the phone.
Then-without a word-I ran out to the address he had sent me.
It's freaking 7pm.
What am I going to do during this time at night?
The location wasn't far. A rundown part of town, the kind of place people avoided once the sun set. Dimly lit, empty streets. Cracked sidewalks.
I stopped in front of an abandoned building. The paint was peeling, the windows covered in grime. The only source of light was a flickering streetlamp, barely holding onto life.
The door was slightly open.
I stepped inside.
Darkness swallowed me whole.
Then-I heard them.
Footsteps.
More than one.
And then-a voice.
"You actually came."
The light above flickered, and suddenly, I could see them.
And I was standing in the middle of it.
Surrounded.
Ten men.
Not students.
Fighters.
Big. Strong.
The kind of men who had seen blood before.
But they had never seen me.
They didn't know what I was.
