But Han Wool just looks puzzled. “I’ve never been here before. Why would I remember it?”
I inhale slowly.
He doesn’t remember.
Nothing.
Not a single flicker of recognition.
I bite my lip, scanning the lake. Maybe... maybe if we go to the other side—
But then I see it.
Or rather, what’s left of it.
The other side of the lake—the spot we used to go to—isn’t the same. The water level has risen, covering half of the path.
To get there, we’d have to walk through knee-high water.
I hesitate.
For a brief second, I consider giving up.
But then Han Wool speaks.
"This place is peaceful," he muses, staring out at the water. "I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere like this before. Is this your secret hideout or something?"
I turn back to him, watching the way his eyes scan the scenery like he’s actually appreciating it.
And I make my decision.
“We’re crossing,” I announce.
Han Wool’s head snaps toward me. “What?”
I gesture at the water. “To the other side. We’re going.”
He laughs. "You’re joking."
I step forward. “Nope.”
His jaw drops. “Wait—wait—why? What’s over there? Are we going to catch fish?”
I ignore him and keep walking, stepping into the water.
Han Wool stares, horrified. "Yah! YAH! Are you insane?!"
I don’t look back.
I hear him mutter a string of curses before—
SPLASH.
Han Wool groans behind me. “I swear, if something touches my leg, I am running back.”
I smirk, stepping deeper. “Scared?”
"Of this? No. Of you? Yes."
We keep moving, water rising to our knees. Han Wool keeps grumbling, rolling up his pant legs as he steps forward cautiously.
Then—
My foot slips.
It happens too fast.
The soft, uneven ground shifts beneath me, making me lose my balance. My arms flail slightly, body tilting just enough to make my heart jump—
And then—
Warmth.
A firm grip wraps around my wrist, steadying me.
For a second, I freeze.
Han Wool’s hand is tight around mine, his grip strong, warm, secure.
I look up.
His face is close, too close. His gaze locked on mine.
For a moment, neither of us moves.
Then he exhales sharply. “This won’t do.”
Before I can react, he suddenly bends down—
