Today I told my family I wanted to be an elf. My mom stared at me weirdly and my younger brother was like, "You mean, Santa Claus elves?" I threw Stellarlune at him and told him to shut his face up.
POV: Keefe
Keefe Cassius Sencen was hopelessly in love with Sophie Elizabeth Foster.
He knew it, and all his friends knew it, all except Sophie the Oblivious.
But she probably didn't want him anyway. Who would want him, the trouble-making prankster, over perfect teal-eyed Wonderboy Fitz Vacker?
December 31st, the year he turned sixteen, gave him new hope.
The initials S. E. F were written in Sophie's neat handwriting on the underside of his wrist. His tattoo was brown, with shimmering gold flecks- the exact color of Sophie's beautiful eyes.
And according to Councillor Terik, his soulmate was kind, brave, and smart. There was nobody in his grade who was kinder, braver, or smarter than Sophie.
He was too afraid to tell her.
Yes, the Keefe Sencen, creator of the Great Gulon Incident, who held the record for the most detention records at Foxfire High, was afraid of telling a girl his feelings.
But Sophie was not just a girl. She was special. She was...well, Sophie.
When it came to her, well, let's just say Keefe wasn't the boy who people thought him to be.
"Keefe?" a soft, familiar voice jerked him out of his thoughts.
"Hey Foster." Keefe gave Sophie one of his famous smirks, but inwardly he was hyperventilating.
Sophie tugged on her eyelashes, a habit Keefe had always thought was adorable. "We need to talk."
Keefe's heart lurched. Had Sophie finally found out his feelings for her? Was she going to say she didn't like him back?
Sophie led Keefe to a spot under a tree. A Panakes, he remembered from school.
Keefe and Sophie started speaking at the same time, then paused, blushing.
"You go first."
"No, you."
"At the same time, then?"
Keefe nodded. He locked eyes with his crush.
"I like you." The words tumbled out of their lips at the same time. Time seemed to slow as they stared at each other.
Keefe's heart stopped, then raced. Sophie liked him? As in more than a friend?
Keefe then did the only thing that came to mind. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers.
An explosion of sparks. Sophie's warm lips against his. A bright, searing light.
They pulled away, Keefe yearning for more of the beautiful girl, for their lips to be against each other once more, to be with her forever.
But they had no choice.
A pain gripped Keefe, intense but somehow pleasing, and he realized that something was happening to his soulmate tattoo.
Under the letters S.E.F., a name was written in the same familiar handwriting: Sophie Elizabeth Foster.
Next to it was a picture that made Keefe gasp. It was a picture of Sophie, her brown eyes twinkling, her blonde hair flowing around her.
It could only mean one thing.
Sophie was his soulmate.
Keefe stared at her, and Sophie stared back.
"You're my soulmate." The words were barely more than a whisper.
And then, louder: "Sophie, you're my soulmate!"
With that Keefe leaped up and spun Sophie around, laughing, Sophie laughing her melodic laugh along with him.
"Keefe," she said passionately. "Keefe...I love you."
"I-I love you too."
The two settled down under the Panakes tree yet again, laughing, cuddling, and occasionally sharing a kiss or two. Keefe couldn't have asked for a better person to be with forever.
Sophie Foster was his world, and Keefe was hers.
Together they would be able to survive anything.
