CW: it gets low key sad at one point but it's for like five seconds I swear

Plot: Karl's best friend Sapnap proposes to him every single year on the same day as their own little tradition.

~
Third Person POV.

The giggles and playful screams of children echo against the concrete and the open sky. The warm spring sun beating down as they play during their break, where Karl sits and peals apart his string cheese peacefully.

"Why are you sitting alone?" A bigger boy asks as Karl brings the cheese to his lips.

"Cause I have no one to sit with," Karl tells him through a mouthful of cheese. "Would you like to sit with me?"

"No," the boy spits, making the other preschoolers around him giggle. "Why would I want to sit with a pansy like you?"

The words sting Karl. "That's mean—"

"I bet you won't make any friends, ever," another boy says. "I bet he won't even get married!"

"I'll marry him," a boy who was walking past says, bringing the attention of the group to him. The boy has dark brown hair and kind eyes that make Karl smile in appreciation for his words.

"Why would you want to marry him?" One of the boys scoffs.

"Why wouldn't I?" The brunette asks, seemingly genuinely confused. "He's kind and pretty and nice, unlike you. Now leave so we can get married,"

The group of boys roll their eyes and wander off. "Thanks," Karl whispers as he looks up at where the boy who just protected him is standing.

"It's all good!" He says with a wide smile. "My name's Nick by the way, but you can call me Sapnap,"

"Nice to meet you, Sapnap," Karl greets, sticking his hand that doesn't have his cheese in it up for a hand shake. "I'm Karl,"

"Nice to meet you too, Karl," Sapnap grips his hand firmly. "Wanna go get married over by the hopscotch? It's where my other friends hang out,"

"Sure," Karl cheerily gets up and follows Sapnap over to the hopscotch area where a few kids their age are sitting eating an assortment of food. Various business deals of trading food being struck as they arrive.

"Everyone, this is Karl, he's my fiancé," Sapnap tells them as he sits down, patting the concrete beside him for Karl to sit down.

"Hello!" A dark haired boy with a beanie says from across the circle, waving enthusiastically. "My names Quackity, what's a fiancé?"

"It's like...I don't know," Sapnap tells him thoughtfully. "Mum just called my dad her fiancé before they were married," he shrugs.

All the preschoolers around them collectively shrug in confusion, before quickly moving on to the next conversation. As they talk, Sapnap nudges Karl's side and hands him what looks like a straw wrapper that's been turned into a makeshift ring.

"Until I can get you a proper ring, I'll give you this paper straw one," Sapnap beams as he slides it onto Karl's finger.

"I'll keep it forever," Karl tells him happily.

A year later and Sapnap and Karl were inseparable, although Sapnap hadn't given him that new ring. Obviously Karl still wore the paper ring though, taking very careful care of it.

They quickly became best friends and would often have play dates over the weekend, climbing trees in the backyard and eating peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

One morning when Sapnap walked into the class room he had a grin on his lips, bounding over he sat next to Karl at their shared desk. "Dream and I went to the arcade yesterday!" Sapnap tells him excitedly.
