writing lovers who grow apart

Hello again! As of right now, I'm crying because in the book Red Queen the main character, Mare Barrow, and another character grow apart. And as sad as it is (for me) I still really like how the author wrote about them growing apart. So, I gathered up some notes from others and turned it into some summed-up versions. Enjoy!

In order to punch the reader in the gut show the two lovers when they were happy vs when they stopped loving each other. This will really impact the readers and make them care about it more and might even cause some to cry.

Ask yourself why they'd grown apart in the first place. Did they fall in love with someone else? Did they disagree on something major? Or is it external factors?

Ask Yourself how did the relationship end? Did it end badly or kind of ok?

Hope this helps!
