"Come on , pick up" I panted as I paced back and forth throughout the waiting room.
The phone went straight to voicemail once again making sigh.
I plopped down in the seat next to Hakeem running my fingers throughout my hair.
The elevator opened and I popped my head up hoping to see my mom, but instead JaQuan and Diamond walked off the elevator with flowers in their hands.
I stood up walking over to them with a small smile. I didn't really know like that Diamond, but I knew JaQuan because Chan brought him around a couple times.
"How is she?" He asked in a saddened tone
"We don't really know yet, it's been hours" I explained playing with my fingers
"I'm sorry, I'm Diamond" She said holding her hand out for me to shake. I shook her hand while nodding my head.
"I'm Kelsey, Chan's older sister. I've heard nice things about you" I smiled at her.
I motioned for them to follow behind me into the seating area.
"What's up Diamond" Zay nodded towards her
"Hey Zay" She smiled sitting beside Zorrie
"What your big head ass been up to?" KB chuckled looking at her
"Working that's all, it's nice to see all of y'all again. I just hate it had to be like this" Diamond sighed looking around the room as Zorrie pulled her closer.
"I don't know if y'all met JaQuan, but he's Channity close friend" I said to them
Keem glanced at him with a mug before turning his head. Of course, JaQuan returned the gesture
The room became silent making the tension somewhat noticeable, but everybody just minded their business.
"Family of Channity Hicks?" The doctor said coming into the room.
We stood up waiting for her as she walked over with her clip board.
"Hi , how are yall. My name is Doctor Kaia Manson and I'm the one taking care of Channity. She's stable and she's responding positively to the tests. However, she suffered an extreme amount of brain damage. We had to sedate her into a medically induced coma, so there's no telling when she'll fully recover" The doctor explained
On one hand I was relieved, but on the other I was still scared for her.
"When can we see her?" I asked wiping a tear from my face
"You can see her now, but only two at a time. Even though she's in a coma, she's still fully aware of her surroundings. We don't want to make her overwhelmed or uncomfortable, it could cause a traumatic seizure" The doctor said making us nod
"I'm gonna go last, y'all can go ahead" I said to everyone.
"Ima wait too" Hakeem mumbled sitting back down in his seat
Everyone began going in and out as me and Hakeem sat in the waiting room
"Are you ok?" I asked looking over to him
He shrugged. "Not really, I feel like all this shit my fault. If I would've never left her and stayed by her side none of this shit would've happened"
"You really hurt her, for two months straight she missed you like crazy. You never returned her calls or texts, I had to console her when she missed you. Even though it hadn't been that long since y'all met, she really confided in you and you let her down" I replied looking at him
"You hurt her a lot, and whoever the bitch is that said those things to her can count her days. As soon as I drop, I'm on her ass" I said in a serious tone making him laugh a little
"I get it, I just wanna make things right. I just wanna talk to her" He groaned to himself
I patted his back and gave him a small smile. "You should, she would love that"
My phone began ringing making my brain finally come to an ease hoping that it was my mom. Instead it was an unknown number
I scrunched my face and stood up. "I'll be right back" I told Hakeem
"Hello" I spoke into the phone
"Hi , is this Kelsey Hicks?" The woman on the phone asked
"Yes"
"This is Janet Stone from the Harris County Coroner's office. Do you have any relations to Shalissa Hicks?" The woman said as I swallowed a huge lump in my throat.
"Y-Yes I'm her daughter, please tell me she's ok" I pleaded as tears fell from my eyes
"I'm sorry to inform you, but Ms.Hicks is unfortunately deceased.."
Before the woman could finish, I dropped my phone as everything felt like it was moving in slow motion.
I dropped down and placed my head into my hands as sobs took over
In my blurred vision I could Hakeem rushing over to me with a concerned look on his face
"My mom... My mom... How am I supposed to tell Chan she's gone?" I sobbed into my hands
