Mephisto Pheles & Amaimon (Platonic Scenario - "The Narrow Gate")

Start from the beginning

Amaimon peeked at his older brother before closing his mouth and retreating to the end of the table. The King of Time shook his head, redirecting his attention to the sight of you rushing your recovery to focus on the donor work once again.

A pleased smile graced his lips, and he took an unnecessary breath for no other reason than to turn the spotlight on himself. “How about we take a break?”

The immediate curiosity on your face encouraged the headmaster to stand and stretch his arms with a few pops of the joints. He lengthened the amount of time it took to reach your desk by walking at a casual pace, his hands rising and genuine excitement slipping into his voice. “We can watch the new season of Hani Hani Sisters, or maybe you'd like to test that rollercoaster you paid for?”

Amaimon looked up from where he had been scratching the belly of his hobgoblin, the round beast lying supine with one leg in the air. “They can't. They promised to play fetch with Behemoth tonight.” The hobgoblin jumped up at the word “fetch” and scanned the office as if searching for the object you or his master had thrown.

The scribbles of your pencil ceased. “I did?”

When the King of Earth stopped licking his lollipop and turned in your direction, you slowly lifted your head, tensed your shoulders, and pulled your lips into a desperate imitation of calm. “Is this another one of those promises I made after not sleeping for two days?” Your tone was akin to a nervous parent struggling to explain a sensitive truth to their kid.

Mephisto clasped his hands together, eyes shut and teeth exposed in a pleased smile. “I have a splendid idea! Why don't we come to my quarters for a slumber party instead? Just the three of us!” The sound of panting drew his eye to Behemoth idling with his tongue dangling from his mouth, and the demon king traded his initial confusion for amusement. “Mm, four!”

You turned your head and rested the side of it on your palm to avoid it slamming into the table out of exhaustion. “I have a house, you know.”

Amaimon observed you as if not understanding the purpose of the statement. “Yes, I know.” Ignoring the look of surprise and concern you hurled in his direction, he turned to his brother once more when the King of Time refused to yield any ground in the discussion.

“Oh, but I just received my new shipment of green tea ice cream!” He gesticulated with grace and acquired the sly tone of a businessman wanting to secure a deal. “It would taste much better if I could share it with someone, and you're aware of how Amaimon gets around sugar.”

The memories of raided popsicle boxes and coming home to empty dessert stashes instilled weariness in his voice. “If I give him a carton, he'll eat it all before I even have a spoonful.”

Amaimon unwrapped a piece of hard candy and tossed it into his mouth, eyes and mind drifting away from the conversation. Mephisto narrowed his gaze at the sweet-toothed demon before lowering his arms and replenishing his joy when he looked at you. “Do take me up on my offer. It won't be available forever.”

You blinked and nearly fell asleep, but the rough texture of the pencil brushing your skin was a painful reminder of the work waiting to be filed. “I need to finish this.”

Discontent flashed across the King of Time like a lightning strike in a dark field. His smile wavered to a frown as he eyed the latest paper, only for it to be reborn with expectant eagerness when his gloved hand landed on the doorknob. “Very well, but I shall return to check your progress!” As Mephisto opened the door, he waved at you but stopped at the apathetic look of his younger brother.

“Amaimon, come with me.” Amaimon, who was reclining on the side of your desk, paused his chewing with a grunt of bewilderment. Mephisto beckoned to him as if luring a dog, and a string of grumbles muffled by the crunches of potato chips followed the King of Earth as he departed with Behemoth at his heels. The door closed after a final wave from Mephisto.
