55-Alcohol Is An Enemy

The drive home was pitch quiet– so quiet that you could hear hearts beating and blood flowing through the veins. Lilith was still pissed at Axel and didn't want to see him around.

When they got home Phoenix and Liam were greeted by their girlfriends before heading to their rooms for bed. Bruna was home as well but in her room calling Axel's cousin Celine.

Although everyone went to bed Axel went onto his balcony and lit a cigarette. It was pitch dark outside by this time and everything was quiet except the low crickets having a night concert.

Lilith creeped into Axel's bedroom to join him on the balcony. She stood beside him and stared out ahead.

"I'm still mad at you" was all she said

She glanced at his face and watched it disappear into the smoke. Lilith looked at the sky; it was empty, no stars and no moon was to be seen.

"I'm not here to blame you Axel. We've been friends ever since we were little. I just–wanna talk. Why Axel?" Lilith said

"I was afraid" Axel said before putting the cigarette between his lips again

"Afraid? Of what?" Lilith asked

"Afraid of losing Devine. Afraid of losing Alora. I wasted too much time building happiness. Everything feels so temporary Lilith" Axel said

"Nothing is temporary until you fight to make it forever. What happened to Don Axel? You always fight for anything you desire." Lilith said still looking out ahead

"Remember when you beat up that kid at recess because he stole my lunchbox?" Lilith added

Axel chuckled

"The kid with the always messy hair and the relish stain on his uniform shirt?" Axel said

"Yes him" Lilith said laughing

"I remember–he was quite annoying actually" Axel said chuckling

There was an awkward silence yet again.

"Are you gonna fight for what you want?" Lilith asked

"What if she's gone? What if I'm too late?" Axel asked

"Then fight to keep her presence alive." Lilith said

"I'm going to sleep–you should get some sleep too" Lilith said walking away

Axel stayed on the balcony for about an hour. Quietly watching the sky and inhaling his cigarette. He remembered the first time he was on a balcony with Alora. It was their first kiss.

Axel smiled remembering the moment and the moment he proposed to Alora.

"What the f*ck was I doing in New York?" Axel whispered to himself

Axel formed his hands into fists squeezing the almost finished cigarette into pieces.

"I f*cking failed you Alora" He whispered to himself

Axel threw the ashes away and slammed the balcony door shut. He laid in bed staring into emptiness. Tossing and turning he just couldn't fall asleep.

Axel got up and sat up in bed. "I need a drink" He whispered

Axel walked out of his room as quietly as possible and walked down the steps. Axel sat in the backyard outside pouring some alcohol into his glass cup. He took a tiny sip before noticing the backdoor opening.

Bruna was on her way to leave. She walked a bit without noticing Axel.

"Where are you going so late?" Axel said

Bruna stopped in shock and was frightened to see Axel.

"Um" Bruna said struggling to form any words

"Where are you going?" Axel asked again

Bruna swallowed the lump in her throat.

"To Celine's house" she whispered

Axel was confused

"To whose house?" Axel asked

"Please don't get mad!" Bruna said

"I'm the last person on earth that should be mad at anyone" Axel said

Bruna walked over to Axel and sat beside him.

"I'm going to Celine's house" Brun said truthfully

"Why?" Axel asked

"Well–we've been seeing each other for a few weeks now" Bruna said

Axel nodded slowly

"Are you mad?" Bruna asked

"No, Celine needs someone like you. Her ex wife was horrible. I think you and her are great for each other." Axel said

"Really?!" Bruna said surprised yet happy

Axel nodded again

"Thank you so much Axel!" Bruna said

Bruna's smile faded

"Enough about me–how are you Axel?" Bruna asked

"I feel like sh*t–I feel guilt so much guilt" Axel said

Bruna pouted

"It's normal to feel that way, Axel. I really do hope everything works out for the best. I miss having Alora around." Bruna said

"Me too" Axel said

"Don't stay here comforting me. Go have fun. Celine is probably wondering where you are" Axel said

"Thank you Axel. I'll see you tomorrow." Bruna said

"Bruna–you can stay with Celine as long as you'd like." Axel said

Bruna nodded before walking away

Axel drank more of the alcohol in his cup. Suddenly getting flashbacks of the day he found Alora injured by the pool.

Axel got up smashing his glass up on the floor as well as the bottle of alcohol. The loud shatters woke up the house. Liam and Cedric grabbed Axel trying to calm him down.

"Axel it's fine we're here!"

Was the last thing Axel heard before passing out
