JJs POV
We are going home today, we are planned to stop by the fire station at lunch to say goodbyes to both Maya and Carina.
I would have liked to stay to get to know her better but I know Emily is ready to go home and get back into work
We just finished packing our bags, Emily just got back to the hotel as well
She had taken the car back to the rental place and taxied back here
We are taking a taxi to the fire station and while Maya and Carina are on lunch they offered to take us to the airport and we'll just leave maras car seat with them to take back with them for someone who needs it to use
"Are we ready and packed?" Emily asked
"Yea I believe so" I say and scan the room quick for anything
"Mara come on" I say and she slides off the bed with her sloth and takes my hand
Emily and I wheeled our suitcases out to the front of the hotel and put them into the back of the taxi and we all got in
The ride was short but mara was not liking having to be in the car with a stranger and was hiding her head in the side of her car seat
Once we got to the fire station Carina met us outside and allowed us to put our bags in the trunk of her car
"Hold me" Mara says while holding on to my leg, I quickly picked her up and rested her on my hip
"Hi Bambina" Carina smiles
"Hi" Mara says shyly and we follow her up to mayas office
"Hey, are you guys ready to go home?" Maya asked
"I am, I'm ready to get back to work" Emily says
"I'm ready to go home but I do wish I could have gotten to know you more" I say
"Well I'll always be here. And you have our number so you can just call whenever" she tells me
"Maybe we can plan a trip to DC?" Carina suggested
"I have never been" she adds
"We'll have to see... I don't know if I can just up and leave" Maya says and we nod understandingly
"We'll keep in touch, not a problem" I smile and bounce Mara on my hip
"Where's poppy?" Mara asked
"Poppy's in the car." I tell her and she nods and lays her head back down on my shoulder
"She looks so much better than the first time I had met her" Maya says and I nod, she is still tiny and she will probably always be. But she is clean, and her dirty blonde hair reaches the middle of her back.
"Yea she does. I think she will always be tiny but if we can get her to gain some more weight that will be good" I say
"Has she seen a doctor?" Carina asked
"Not since the hospital, we have an appointment with a pediatrician back in DC" I explain
"You'll have to keep us updated, she is our little nipote" Carina smiles
"Don't worry, I will" I smile. I'm glad that I had met Maya, her and Carina both are amazing and Carina already cares for Mara
"We should probably get going" Emily's says and I nod
"Are you ready Bella?" Carina asked Maya
"Yes. I just texted Andy to let her know I would be going" she says and gets up from her seat
The 5 of us got into their car and started on to the drive
"So how does it work with cases? Do you leave every week?" Maya asked
"Usually yea, we would get a case on Monday when we came in and come back later in the week. There are some emergencies but other than that We usually leave on Monday" Emily answers
"And what will you do with the bambina?" Carina asked
"Our co-worker and friend will stay with her. She is out tech Analyst so she doesn't come with us" I explain
"Oh okay" she replies, there was something about the way she said it. Like why would we leave our daughter while we were gone for days
I didn't really think of that. I figured it would be like any parents going to work but we won't come home at the end of the day.
Of course some days we get lucky and are home by Wednesday.
I guess the alternative would be for me to just not go back to work.... I don't think I could do that. I love being in the field. I don't think I could adapt to just being a stay at home mom. I haven't even been out long now and I already miss it.
We were soon pulling up to the airport, once we all got out instead of letting Mara walk I picked her up and held her close to me.
After we got everything out we said our goodbyes and walked inside

We just arrived home, Penelope kept Sergio while we were gone. It was reaching 10 pm here with the time change it didn't even seem like that late and Mara was still awake
"Can you just order dinner? I'm going to give her a bath quick" I ask Emily and as soon as I mentioned a bath maras head shot up, she still wasn't completely comfortable with that
"No bath" she says firmly and I continue to her room
"Mara come on, help me pick out your Pajamas" I try and she come over to me
She chose a dinosaur set, the bottoms were a light blue and the top was pink with a light blue dinosaur on the front
"Alright come on" I say and hold out my hand and she takes it and I lead her to her bathroom
"You too!" She protest. And crosses her arms
"Mara, I'll be right here. It's going to be okay" I say and she shakes her head
"No" she says with a shaky voice and reaches for me to pick her up,
Once I did she held onto my neck and wouldn't let go
"Okay okay," I sigh, agreeing with her conditions

After we got out of the shower and got dressed I brushed through her hair and put it into a braid and we went back out to Emily who had food plated for us all
I sat down next to Emily with Mara in my lap, we began to eat and Mara didn't complain this time as I fed her
She ate almost all of her meal like she had in Seattle and said she was full,
"Go play in your room for a little, I am just going to talk to Emmy" I tell Mara after we had cleaned up from dinner
She nodded and rubbed her eyes and went back to her room
"Everything okay?" Emily asked and pulled me down in her lap in the living room
"Do you think I'm a terrible person?" I asked her
"What? Of course not why would you ask?" She says
"It's just- when Carina asked what happens to Mara when we work.... " I sigh
"I got this feeling from her after I told her. I felt very judged " I say honestly
"Well.... Us leaving Mara with Penelope while we work is like dropping her off at daycare or with a babysitter but we personally know her. We know Penelope would never hurt her and she will be safe. That is a lot more than some people Can say" Emily says
"It's not like we are leaving her forever. We will always come back" she says
"Don't think about this too much. You're an amazing mother Jayje. I love you. And that little girl in there loves you."
