This portion of the ceremony was taking  place following the tying of the Mangalsutra and established the commitment the couple makes to each other during the wedding ceremony.

Saptapadi quite literally translates from Sanskrit to ‘seven steps’. We are familiar with images across the Internet of Indian Brides leading their Grooms around the fire pit at the Mandap, but few know the significance of these steps.

The couple took seven full circles, walking clockwise around the agni, representing the seven principles and promises they make to each other; each step is referred to as a ‘phere’.

They are tied together with the dupattas, or chunis, from the Gath Bandhan ritual, which was used to keep the couple united as they make their rounds.

"Ab var aur vadhu saptapadhi keliye khade ho jaaye." Priest announced.

Sidharth got up and helped her up as a gentleman that he is.

The Seven Steps

While the couple was making their rounds, the priest  was dictating mantras pertaining to each specific phere.

Sidharth takes the pinky finger (or hand) of shehnaaz and leads her for the first four pheras.

The moment there hands touched they felt that belongingness towards each other. Their brain seeping each and every vow and mantra priest was reciting.

1. "ham apane ghar ka bharan-poshan karen, achchhe svaasthy mein rahen aur ek-doosare, apane parivaaron aur apanee parampara ke prati apane kartavyon aur jimmedaariyon ka nirvahan karenge." Priest told the meaning of first vow.

(Let us provide for our household, stay in good health and carry out our duties and responsibilities to each other, our families and our tradition.)

2. "ham apanee maanasik aur aadhyaatmik shaktiyon ka vikaas karenge"

(Let us develop our mental and spiritual powers)

3. "ham apane dhan aur aaraam ko nek aur uchit tareekon se badhenge"

(Let us increase our wealth and comfort by righteous and proper means)

4. "ham aapasee prem, sammaan aur vishvaas se gyaan, sukh aur sadbhaav praapt karenge"

(Let us acquire knowledge, happiness and harmony by mutual love, respect and trust)

Like this they completed their 4 vows. Hand in hand soaking the every moment of it.

"Ab vadhu saamne var ke saamne aaye aaye aur bache hue phere purna kare." Priest said.

then they switch places and shehnaaz finished the last three by leading him to the culminating step.

Each of these pheras signifies a specific meaning for both the Bride and Groom – complementary meanings that ensure that they will work as a unit to make this marriage successful, healthy, and prosperous.

5. "ham majaboot, gunee aur veer bachchon ke sangharshapoorn parivaar ke saath dhanya honge"

(Let us be blessed with contended family of strong, virtuous and heroic children)
