«Mom, this is stupid,» you say as you study your dress in the mirror. It's a light yellow hourglass dress, with laced silk. Your mom is forcing you to go to a dinner at the country club.

«Come on, y/n, it will be fun,» she says whilst putting on a pair of earrings. «Besides, Ali will be there, won't she?» You shake your head and sit down in front of your vanity mirror. «Her parents are out of town.»

Your mother clicks her tongue and walks over to you. «I'm sure there's plenty of people there at your age,» she says as she runs a comb through your hair. She grabs the curling iron that's been warming up, and starts making her way through sections of hair.

«Have you spoken to Daniel lately?» She asks. «Yeah? You say and raise your eyebrows. «Why are you asking?»

Your mother sighs deeply. «I spoke to Lucille. She's worried about him.» You don't reply, you just stare down at your hands. «Well,» she goes on, as she curls the last section of your hair, «she's concerned that he's getting into fights. And now he's learning karate? I don't know... You don't happen to know anything about this, do you?»

What were you supposed to say? Yeah mom, you know Johnny? Yeah he's been beating up Daniel. Yeah, I've still gone out with him. You start to think you and Johnny would make a great couple, seen as you're both assholes.

«Is this an interrogation?» You ask as your feelings take control. Your mom looks at you with wide eyes. «Calm down, darling,» she puts the curling iron down and pulls the plug. «I was just asking, alright?»

You feel bad about upsetting her. You didn't want to make a scene now, not before your first night at the country club. «I'm sorry,» you say. Your mother smiles and pulls you into a hug. «It's fine. Just grab your jacket, sweetie. We're gonna be late.»

The drive over to the country club is quiet. You don't know what to say to her. That you've been a terrible, selfish friend to her best friends son? Your best friend? It's all too complicated right now.

You eventually get there, and it is packed - to say the least. You don't immediately see any familiar faces, so while your mom greets everyone, you sit down at a table.

You look at all the rich people drinking champagne out of expensive cups. How they whisper tauntingly as the lower class servants clean up after their mess. You don't want to ever become one of those.

You watch as your mother puts on her fake voice when she talks to the richer ladies. Always be on your best behaviour, she says. God forbid anyone finds out your family is completely dysfunctional.

Speaking of dysfunctional. Looking out one of the tall windows in the country club, you see Joshua and his friends standing outside and smoking.

And though he acted like a complete asshole the other day, and he makes your blood boil, he was right. You made yourself seem available to him, but you had been thinking about Johnny all day. Maybe you were leading him on.

You should at least talk, you think. Maybe he didn't mean what he said, and he'll apologize. You both were pretty pissed. You get up and walk through the backdoor to the garden, and find them all standing on the porch.

«Hey, Joshua,» you say quietly. «Look, I—» «Coming back for more?» One of his friends spurts out. A few of the guys around him snicker between each other. You cross your arms. «Sorry?»

Joshua only smirks. «Come on, princess, don't act like such a prude.» Your eyes widen. «Please, we know all about it,» another one of his friends say in a sneer. «You're really throwing yourself out there, aren't you?»
