❝𝐖𝐄𝐋𝐋 this is awkward," Nick mumbled as they sat in his car outside, waiting for Karl and the rest to show up at whatever the boy had planned. He was texting them about it but no one seemed to respond.

Jordyn turned away from the window where she'd been staring at a group of kids at the playground on the swings and glanced at him, "What's awkward?"

"I think they just bailed on us," Nick replied, turning his phone off and tossing it to the back seat grumbling. "I'm sorry," he then added. "They literally wasted our time."

"It's fine," Jordyn muttered and turned back to look out of the window. The kids were gone.

Nick sighed and leant against the steering wheel.

Of course, this was Karl's doing, setting them both up to try and get off that "we're just friends" bullshit. In fact, Nick didn't like it either. He liked Jordyn, yeah, and the fact that he had to come to terms with the reality of her never going to see him more than a friend upsets him more than anyone else.

Nick couldn't be mad at his friends for wanting to help, in their own way, he just wished they had warned him first to prevent something as awkward as this from happening.

He wondered what Jordyn was thinking of right now. He looked up only to find her already staring at him.

She gave him a smile. A gentle, loving smile. The kind that would make you want to be the reason behind it.

"What?" Nick turned red.

"Nothing," Jordyn hummed and brought her legs to her chest, resting her chin on her knees. "I'm waiting for you."

"Oh," he said. "What do you want me to do?"

"You could drive me home," she shrugged.

Nick started the car.

Keyword: could.

"Okay," he nodded. "I'm sorry, again."

"Nick, it's fine, I promise," she chuckled. "I had nothing better to do anyway."

Nothing better to do anyway.

"It's kinda sad though," she continued. "I was looking forward to spending time with you guys."

Spending time with you―

Nick shut down the car and unlocked the doors.

Jordyn looked at him confused as he hopped out of the car and reached to her side, opening the front door and extending his arm.

"What are you doing?" she frowned, looking at his hand and then back at his face.

The boy held an expression that, for once, Jordyn could not read.

"Taking a risk," he responded. "Now come on."

"Why?" she asked but grabbed his hand and hopped out of the jeep nonetheless. "Where are you taking me?"

Nick locked his car and laced their fingers together. "Remember that time you told me why you liked the color sunset orange?"

Jordyn hummed, the corners of her mouth lifting to form a soft smile as she recalled the memory. "Yeah?"

"Show me."
