A noise makes me flinch awake. Newt is still sleeping, and I try to calm myself back down enough to let the adrenaline fade away. The darkness of the room isn't helping, though, and I don't like the cramped feeling.
There are evil things in the dark.
I try to push the thoughts away, but fear is winding tighter and tighter around my throat. It was nothing. I didn't wake up for any reason. I'm safe. Everything is fine.
Well, aside from half of my friends dying.
I need to fall back asleep, and then morning will come. Morning brings light and maybe safety, and-
The ladder on my bunk bed creaks, and the hair on the back of my neck stands up.
Taking a soft breath, I free myself from Newt's limbs and sit partway up. Is someone here?
It's probably no one, but I need to look over the edge to make-
A figure in a gas mask appears over the edge of the bunk bed.
Panic hits me, but before I can scream there's a tube aimed in my face, expelling hissing gas. I'm falling as unconsciousness steals the terror from my blood.
