POV: Xela

I waited inside what these humans called a warehouse, knowing that the demon was on its way to face me in battle.

(Flashback)

"Keep still, and I'll release you."

"Meg... It vannak." The demon holding the female human still looked up to where my brothers and I were hiding, giving away the fact that it had warned its pack of us.

I jumped down and tried to slay it with my energy sword but missed. "We've been engaged!" A demon in blue yelled, I went to decapitate the cyan one next to it, only for that one to save it. I knew it was too dangerous to be here so I turned for the exit. "Bad guy coming out!" A demon in black fired his weapon on me so I knocked it to the ground. I thought my brothers were behind me so I kept running. Apparently they stationed one at the door to the outside, since I nearly had my head taken off by its weapon. I side stepped to dodge its attack before knocking it into a wall, buying me time to make my escape.

Only when I was outside did I realize that I was alone. "Brothers, report" I spoke through the communications.

"They've only sent two demons, our forces will make short work of them" one of them replied

"Good, a phantom will be here to retri-"

"Fall back, fall back! The demons are tearing through our defences!"

My eyes grew wide at the sound of battle. "Hold on, I'm coming!" I ran and frantically looked for another way in, resorting to crawling through the tiny air vents the humans built in this outpost.

"They have us cornered, Soko has fallen!" I doubled my efforts upon hearing this. "Xela, we I won't survive this. Please, ensure the Great Journey continues."

"I'm almost there Lokan, hold your ground!" I broke through the venting and ran as fast as I could, I kept a hand on my sword in case I encountered one of the demons. By the time I came to the corridor where our troops were stationed, everything was silent. I saw nothing still alive, only the aftermath of the slaughter. I ran down the halls until I came to the power room. I walked cautiously until my foot came into contact with something. I looked down and saw Soko, his chest blown open with small holes surrounding the caving wound. Despite looking at my surroundings, I didn't see Lokan nearby. "Lokan, where are you?!"

I heard the firing of two bolts from a plasma rifle, I stood up and hurried over to see Sokos blade embedded into Lokan as he sat on the ground. "Lokan!" I ran over and knelt down to observe how fatal the wound was. "Don't worry, I'll-"

Lokan laid his hand on my shoulder. "We swore... To uphold the Covenant."

"Even to our dying breath." I bowed my head, remembering the oath every Sanghili must make to join the Covenant.

"And now... My time has come... You... Have always been... The strongest of our clan... I can rest easy... Knowing you willl... Carry on our legacy." Lokan coughed up a fatal amount of blood. I supported his back to make it slightly easier on him as he took his last breath.

I closed his eyes before standing up, now covered in Lokans blood. "Worry not brother, I'll ensure the end of the demons who had done this."

(Timeskip... Still in the flashback)

I watched with the Shipmaster and Supreme Commander as the super carrier exploded. "There, you have your revenge" The Shipmaster said.

"No, only one is. The other five are still alive." I replied, seeing a small glimmer fall toward the scarred planet much further ahead than the remains of the starship.

I could almost feel the burning glare of the Supreme Commander as he spoke. "Those demons better be worth that ship, or they won't the the only ones to fall with this planet." With that said, the two fleet commanders walked out the room.

(Timeskip again)

"Stop here!" I called out to the pilot. I watched as the demons ran for cover as they were the pests they call rats. I aimed my new needle rifle before taking the shot, the cyan tactician of their pack started to crumble to the ground only to be caught dead by its member. The black demon grabbed its dead comrades sidearm and began to fire at me along with the rest of its pack, only for all the shots to miss.

I gave a smirk before turning to the pilot. "Continue on."

(Yes, another timeskip)

"The scarabes are heading for the human ship, they should arrive shortly" an Ultra informed me.

"Reroute one to the cliffs."

"But, we were given orders to-"

I slammed the rebel into the nearest set of crates. "DO IT!!! NOW!!!" They finally decided to obey, I watched as the scarab intercepted and cornered the two demons on foot. I couldn't help but smile at the sight, until a human dropship flew itself into it. I yelled in anger and punched the force field.

A grunt cleared its throat. "Um, maybe we could... Beat them to the... Human ship? I-It looks like they're heading there anyway."

I widened my eyes at the realization before looking at the Unggoy. "You've been promoted." The grunt let out a sigh of relief as I looked to a minor elite. "Contact the nearest brute battalion to send their greatest forces, I want those demons to meet their fate."

(FINALLY!!! An end to all the timeskips!)

Finally, after three days the demon was finally about to meet his fate. I ignited my blade and waited for my moment, watching it struggle to live. Once it had disposed of some elites it began to sit up from its laying position on the ground. I walked over and plucked it up before embedding the sword into its chest. I saw a flash of blue, then...

Everything went black

(End of flashback)

I kept thinking about my past, about how I was found by the insane human with the tail of an insect as well as its larger companion. How the thought of serving the very beings I once sought to eradicate disgusted me. The soft clanking of metal on rock brought me out of these thoughts. I couldn't help but smirk. "I knew you would come, demon."
