Dan: “Jeez. Your spine sticks out so much. Girl, you need to eat,” your friend pointed out as you were putting the DVD into the player. You were always so self conscious about that. You were a healthy weight, but having your spine stick out like that almost made you look anorexic. You straightened out your back a little to make it look less severe. It only seemed to show when your back was bent. “Oh, trust me. I eat a lot,” you replied as you walked back over to the sofa. She has seen you eat before, she should know. About midway through the movie, you got up and went to the bathroom. As you did so, Dan turned toward your friend. “She’s really self-conscious about that, ya know.” “About what?” “About her spine sticking out like that. Even though she’s a perfectly good weight, she still tries to gain a little just so it doesn’t stick out like that.” Dan didn’t mind it though. Strangely, he thought it was kind of cool. It was just another thing that made you unique.

Phil: “Are you sure you should be wearing a dress that short?” your friend asked. “What’s wrong with it? I think it’s fine.” You looked down at it. It came to the middle of your thigh— not too revealing. “It’s just a little windy, is all.” You looked outside. Not a single tree was moving. You walked in front of the mirror. Was it too short? Too revealing? Unsure, you went into the bedroom and changed. A minute later Phil knocked on the door and opened it slightly. “Why are you changing?” he asked. “What you had on before was fine.” You shrugged examining the new dress you had put on. Phil was about to ask what had made you change your mind, but he realized your friend must have said something. He just nodded and closed the door behind him. Phil didn’t like confrontation, but he knew how sore of a subject weight was with you. “Weight’s a pretty sensitive topic with her,” he said casually. “I don’t find anything wrong with her weight, but if you feel the need to say something rude, I hope you think before you speak.”
