losing weight part 1

_____________

Olivia, Age Eight:

"Hi, you must be Madden right? Olivia Madden. Great. You must be the mother. Nice to meet you, I'm Doctor Johnson.", Olivia walked inside the somewhat small room and was immediately greeted by the doctor, who actually seemed too excited for their appointment.

"Please sit down.", he shook her mum's hand and let them sit down on the chairs in front of the wooden, brown desk.

"So, what's her problem?", were the words that Doctor Johnson decided to use, making the little girl's heart break and her chest ache.

"You can see the problem.", were the words her mum chose to say.

As Olivia grew, she wondered how someone could act in such a cruel way towards a child. A child. Why should a child worry about something that is in no way relevant- at any age.

The doctor laughed dryly.
"Take off your shoes, Olivia and step on the weigh scale.", Olivia hated these words. People in her family forced her to step on that cruel thing whose numbers defined her inner and outer person.
And if she didn't follow their order, people would call her mean names and then the little girl would cry, wondering how it'd feel like to be someone else.
Olivia was only eight. Eight year old children should not be pressured. No child should feel and think the way she did.

Absentmindedly, the little girl took off her shoes, took a deep, unnoticeable breath and walked towards the weigh scale. One feet was pressed against the cold glass and then the other followed. The doctor walked towards her slowly and then stared at the number that Olivia wasn't able to see.

"54kg.", Doctor Johnson said and Francesca - her mum - looked down, her daughter doing the same.
"You can step away and put your shoes again.", Olivia followed the order.

The number said by the doctor continued to play in her mind, making her her own enemy.

____________

Meredith, Age Eight:

"A check up is needed, pretty baby. We just wanna be sure that you're healthy and strong.", said Harry and lifted little Meredith up, placing her on his lap.

"There's no need to confirm the fact that I'm way stronger than you, daddy.", little Meredith said, jumping off his lap and climbing up on the other side of the couch.

"What's up, cupcakes?", Olivia entered the room with a few cookies in a small bowl.
"Daddy said I have to go to the doctor. I don't want to! The doctor is so mean, mummy! Daddy doesn't believe me!", the little girl whined and jumped from her seat to wrap her arms around her mummy's legs.

"What doctor?", her eyes moved on Harry who quickly looked away.
"I thought that it'd be okay for the doctor to take a look on her.", were his words and Olivia's eyebrows furrowed.
"Why? Is she sick?"
"No."
"Then why?", she pushed the question around fearing that the answer would be the one that she feared.

"Because I'm afraid that she's not healthy.", his wife's eyes widened.
"Meredith, darling, could you please go to your room?", their daughter nodded, while her eyes looked at the way they stared at each other. She quickly walked away.

"What are you talking about, Harry?", Harry rolled his eyes and stood up facing her.
"I'm saying that since she doesn't do any sports apart from playing with Finn, she may not be healthy."
"The only thing you do is work, Harry and you're not the healthiest. What are you talking about?", Harry looked away, shaking his head lightly.

"You know what I'm talking about, Olivia."
"I obviously don't, since I'm asking again."
"She's fat, okay?!", Harry suddenly raised his voice and immediately turned around, as if he didn't believe the words that came out of his mouth.

Olivia simply looked at him, not believing that he had just said that.
The room stayed silent until some tiny quick footsteps were heard coming.

"Really, daddy? That's what you think of me?", Harry didn't dare to turn around anymore and Olivia's eyes simply produced tears.
"I'm sorry, daddy.", a sob left Olivia's mouth at her daughter's words.
"Meredith, baby. Come here.", her mummy knelt down in front of her and Meredith ran in her open arms.

The little girl hid her face in her neck and started crying, while Harry kept looking away with tears in his eyes.
