I sigh leaning my head against his shoulder. My eyes trained on the book on my lap. “Why are books with sad endings always the best?” I ask closing my eyes as I finish the book, letting it fall shut.

“Maybe because with sadness comes powerful emotion and emotion is what makes things great.” He responds. I turn to face him with a grin.

“You’re so smart, you know that?” I ask.

“I’ve been told that once or twice” he says with a cheeky smile. I smack him in the stomach with a laugh pushing myself up into a sitting position.

“Don’t you and Niall have a date tonight?” he asks and my eyes fly wide. I jump up and grab my phone, checking the time.

“Shit” I yell. “I’ll see you later Aldwin” I call as I race out the door. I jump in the car, hitting the speed dial to call Niall. It rings twice before he picks up.

“I am so sorry, I completely lost track of time” I rush before he has a chance to speak.

“You were with Aldwin again weren’t you” he responds, a hint of anger in his voice.

“Yea we were ju—“

“You’re ALWAYS with him” he explodes.

“What? No! I—“

“Sometimes I think you care more about him than me” he grumbles. I frown.

“Niall, you know that’s not true. I—“ I start saying. I’m cut off by the screech of tires and the sound of crunching metal as I’m rammed from the side.

*Beep Beep Beep Beep *

“Where is she? Where? Tell me” a voice cuts through the haze of pain. I hear a door burst open and focus my eyes enough to see Niall, a frantic look in his eyes as he sees me on the bed.

“It hurts” I whimper, the tears pricking my eyes. He takes my hand and kneeling by the bed.

“I’m so sorry Nicole. This is all my fault” he says, his voice cracking. “If I hadn’t” he says, not being able to continue.

“Shh” I say my vision getting hazy again. “It’s not your fault” I whisper. “I love you. Only you. Forever” With that, everything goes black.

“We are gathered here today to mourn the passing of a beautiful young lady. Her life was full of promise and although her death was quick, her memory will last forever.” The preacher says to the solemn crowd. “Now we will hear a few words from Sarah’s boyfriend, Niall” he says stepping aside, motioning the tear streaked boy up onto the stage.

Trembling, he sets some paper down on the podium and looks out over the crowd. He opens his mouth to speak but nothing comes out. He looks back down at the paper and a tear slides down his chin and falls onto the paper. Taking a deep breath he begins. “Nichole. She… she was everything I’d ever wanted. Ev-everything I’d ever hoped for. I just can’t…” he says a sob escaping and he clamps a hand over his mouth to stifle it. The crowd watches as the young man breaks down on the stage. A chair squeaks and another young man gets up and joins the original boy, comforting him as the young man breaks down on his shoulder. After a few moments the boy has gathered himself enough to continue.

“Thanks Aldwin” he whispers and the young man pats his shoulder sympathetically before returning to his seat.

The boy looks out at the crowd again before he begins fumbling in his jacket pocket finally pulling out a small box. “That night was going to be a special night.” He says choking on his words. “It wasn’t an engagement ring. We were to young to get married” he says forcing a laugh. “It was a promise ring” he says flipping open the box, revealing the small silver band. “A promise that I’d always be hers and that we would be together forever.” He pulls the ring out of the box and slips it on his pinkie finger, the only finger it would fit on. “Now… now we won’t be able to be together. But I will always love you” he says looking back at the coffin.

“Forever”

Authors Note

This is one that was requested to be a tragedy. I don't write them with sad endings or even very much sadness in them in general unless it's specifically requested. Personally, I like writing them this way so if you don't mind there being sad things in it, let me know. I can write them where something sad happens but the couple still ends up together also so that is also an option.
