“Why are we doing this again?” I ask with a yawn, trying to keep my eyes open as we sit down on the park bench.

“Because you like roller-skating and this was the only time we could go since I’m leaving for vacation at lunch” she responds curtly as she passes me a pair of skates and starts putting on her own. I yawn again and nod sleepily before starting to lace up my skates. The only good thing about being here at 6 in the morning was that there was almost no one else around. I look down the path and see one person rounding the bend in the path running with a baby stroller, but that was pretty much it. I stand up, wobbling momentarily on the skates before I regain my balance. I knew how to skate; it was one of my favorite things to do. I begin to perk up as I skate around in circles, the familiarity of the task at hand triggering the muscle memory.

“So first one around the park?” I ask with a smile. She groans.

“You know I can barely stand, let alone beat you” she complains which just brightens my smile.

“Which is why this will be so fun” I say with a grin. She frowns at me, crossing her arms and looking at me expectantly. I sigh.

“Fine, I’ll do two laps, you do one” I say and she smiles, having gotten what she wanted.

“On your mark, get set, go” I shout as I take off, instantly taking the lead. I let out a laugh as I zip down the path, my surroundings becoming a blur as I speed down. I fly around the bend, narrowly avoiding the runner with the baby carriage. That would have been bad, I think, risking a glance back at the person who was glaring after me.  I finish the lap and look to see if I can see where my friend was. I see her disappearing around the bend and I grin, picking up my pace to make sure I could catch up with her before she finished.

“Watch out” a voice yells as I round the bend. My eyes widen seeing the startled expression appear suddenly in front of me and soon we are a mess of tangled limbs on the ground, the bag of food in his hand flying. I let out a groan, holding my head that was pounding from the crash.

“Would you mind getting off” a muffled voice asks. My eyes widen as I realize the soft ground below me wasn’t grass but was instead the boy I’d crashed into.

“Sorry” I say rolling off of him instantly. He lays there a few more seconds and I begin to wonder if I’d seriously hurt the guy, when he groans and sits up. He quickly checks his arms and legs for injuries and I bite back a smile when I see his hands go up to his hair to see if it was still all right. When he’s satisfied he’s ok, he looks over at me.

“Well I suppose that’s one way to get my attention” he says, a smile forming on his lips. “Girls have done a lot of things but crashing into me on skates was never one.” I let out a laugh raising my eyebrow at the dark skinned boy in front of me.

“So you got all the girls falling for you huh?” I ask teasingly. He smirks, nodding his head.

“Well yea, it is me after all” he says causing me to laugh, shaking my head at his cockiness.

“Wow” I say with a laugh. “You may be good looking, but not that good looking” I say teasingly “It would take a lot more than that to get me to fall”. He chuckles, eyeing me suspiciously.

“Well technically you already did fall” he jokes “You do know who I am right?” he asks. I frown at the boy in front of me “What do you mean? Are you like the quarterback of the school team or something?” I ask, noting his varsity jacket. He seems to find this hilarious as he bursts out laughing. I take the moment to look him over. My eyes wander from the varsity jacket, to the tan pair of pants, to the flash of tattoo I see on his wrist, to his hair, which had been styled up, not a hair out of place despite getting knocked over. It makes me wonder how much hairspray was used to create that quif. I realize he’s stopped laughing and I look back up at his face where he’s watching me, an amused expression on his face.

“Done checking me out?” he asks. I blush and busy myself by standing up, brushing the dirt off my clothes.

“So what are you doing out at 6 in the morning anyways?” I ask, changing the subject.

“Well I was getting breakfast for me and the boys” he says trailing off, looking at the smashed bag of food splayed across the ground. I wince slightly.

“Sorry about that…” I say trailing off. “Do you want me to pay you back for it?” I ask. He looks at me surprised.

“No that’s ok. I can spare a few dollars” he says with a chuckle. “Although I wouldn’t say no if you wanted to go get some breakfast with me” he says with a grin. I laugh let out a laugh at his cheesy remark.

“You make it sound like I’m asking you out” I tease. He winks, standing up also and brushing himself off.

“So is that a yes?” he asks. I open my mouth to response when I hear a voice call out my name. I turn around and see my friend wobbling back over on her skates.

“Where have you been? I was waiting at the finish line for like 10 minutes! I was so excited I’d won.” She exclaims before noticing that I wasn’t alone.  “Oh” she says, eyeing the boy in front of us. “What’s going on here?” she asks me, raising an eyebrow at me, a smile forming on her lips. From the look in her eye I could tell she thought he was cute. The look in her eyes was basically screaming at me to jump on that. I open my mouth to introduce the two when I realize that I’d never gotten his name.

“Well I was about to take your lovely friend to breakfast” he says with a smile. I quickly shake my head, realizing I had forgotten I’d been here with her when we had originally been talking about food.

“I can’t just ditch her” I explain.

“Are you kidding? Of course you can!” she says with a smile, pushing me towards the boy. You could tell she was in full-on matchmaker mode. I laugh.

“Ok, just let me take my skates off” I say untying the skates and putting my shoes back on.

“I guess I’ll see you when you get back from vacation” I say to my friend giving her a hug goodbye. She nods, hugging me back.

“Try not to have to much fun with..” she whispers trailing off not knowing his name. She pulls back and looks over at the guy. “What’s your name by the way?” she asks bluntly as I walk back over next to him.

“Zayn” he says with a smile, lacing his fingers with mine. “Zayn Malik”
