“Are you sure this is going to work?” I ask for the 50th time. We were talking on the phone, having our nightly chat, while he was on his tour across America and I was back home in Doncaster. It had been three months since I had last seen is beautiful blue eyes. I had to be content with looking at the pictures of him that appeared daily on tumblr, but it was never enough. I wanted him here next to me, to be able to hold him in my arms.

“Of course babe, it’s gotta be you” he says trying to lighten the mood by quoting one of his song lyrics. It works, a smile appearing at the edge of my lips.

“Will you sing me a song?” I request, holding the phone to my ear. He lets out a chuckle since I always request that.

“What do you want this time?” he asks.

“Our song” I request. Theres a pause on the line and my eyes close as I hear him take a breath and then the beautiful voice emerge through the phone line.

If I don’t say this now I will surely break

As I’m leaving the one I want to take

Forgive the urgency but hurry up and wait

My heart has started to separate

My mind flashes back to right before the X-factor, when it was just the two of us. No fans, no paparazzi, no craziness, just us. I remember the moment he first asked me out, he had made the first move, breaking through the friend zone. A smile forms on my face as I remember how he had led me down to a lake, the moon full in the sky. I had let out a gasp seeing the light reflected off the lake and the dozens of candles he had set up around a blanket. We settle down on the blanket and I looked at Louis with confusion written all over my face. I had no idea why he was doing this. We had always been close, but he had always treated me like a friend.

“What’s going o—“ I had started to ask, when he puts a hand over my mouth silencing me.

“There’s something I wanted to ask you” he says abnormally nervous. “I didn’t know how to say it, so I thought I’d sing it” he says pulling his ipod out of his pocket and setting up a portable music player. I nod, staying silent as he pushes play and a song emerges on the player. I let out a gasp as I recognize the song, it had been one of my favorites, he starts singing, looking earnestly in my eyes, and I realize how much he means the words.

Oh, oh

Be my baby

Ohhhhhh

Oh, oh

Be my baby

I’ll look after you

I had cut him off with a kiss at this point, letting The Fray continue singing as the two of us were wrapped up in the moment.

I return to the moment at hand as Louis starts in on the next verse.

There now, steady love, so few come and don’t go

Will you won’t you, be the one I’ll always know

When I’m losing my control, the city spins around

You’re the only one who knows you slow it down.

I bite my lip, holding back a smile at the irony of that verse. About the fact that I’d just been asking if he really wanted to stay with me, when he had the whole world at his finger tips. I let his words sweep around me, comforting me with the fact that he still loved me, that he still wanted me around. He repeats the chorus and I grab the teddy bear Louis had given me on our first official date when we had gone to the carnival. He had spent almost 50 dollars trying to win that stupid bear for me from one of the games. Finally the carnival guy had just felt sorry for him and gave it to him.

If ever there was a doubt,

My love she leans into me

This most assuredly counts

She says most assuredly.

Squeezing my eyes closed, I pretend that Louis is with me instead of the bear. It could never replace him, but it was the best I had at the moment. He repeats the chorus again, tears coming to my eyes hearing the be my baby part. I missed him so much it hurt.

It’s always have and never hold

You’ve begun to feel like home

What’s mine is yours to leave or take

What’s mine is your to make your own

I feel the tears begin to run down my cheeks as I realize the truth in the lyrics. Louis was my home. With him gone, it felt like something was missing. I was his just as much as he was mine.

He begins the chorus again and I hear a noise outside my window. I frown. Who was interrupting my moment with Louis? I walk over to the window, the phone pressed to my ear. Just because someone was interrupting, doesn’t mean I was going to stop Louis. I look out into the night and my jaw drops, the phone falling from my hand. I bolt out the door of my room, flying down the stairs and out the door, into the familiar arms.

Oh, oh

Be my baby

I’ll look after you

He says, finishing the song before his lips press against mine finally home.
