"You're awfully quiet," Ethan said on the way to a hospital, the one my mom's boyfriend works at. 

I shrugged, aware he couldn't see. The corner of my forehead was pressed against the window. My eyes were mesmerized by the view of the beaches. The sun had set and it was dusk as we drove. 

After minutes of silence, Ethan spoke.

"There's nothing to be nervous about Evan, Alex is a really great doctor."

That thought hung in the air, making it seem poisonous. 

"I'm not nervous," I said as we arrived at the hospital. I had spoken to Ethan, but a part of me knew I also said it to convince myself.
